Aneurysm grew 4.1 to 4.7 in one year - which questions should I ask?

Posted by scottbliz @scottbliz, Oct 14 8:35am

I am 75 female 5'6" and 157 lbs. Very active and try to stay busy every day. My aneurysm grew from 4.1 to 4.7 in one year. My cardiologist just referred me to a surgeon. I know very little about growth rate and questions I should ask. My mother had two aneurysms and 3 brothers died suddenly at 42, 50, 65 and two of dads brothers died of ruptured aneurysms. Since I live 52 miles from the nearest the hospital how big of a rush should I be in.

That’s what I’m wondering.. We’re these both CT’s with contrast? We’re they read by the same radiologist? I thought mine had grown 4 mm in 6 months and it was a gated CT.
Turns out it was measured wrong and lucky me, it was still 4.5 cm!

My husband has an ascending aortic aneurysm, but no one else in his family has had this. Do you know if yours blood pressure is usually below 120/80? Do you know if yours is ascending or descending? I ask, because we hear that The surgery for descending is potentially must easier and less ‘tricky’. Either way, I’d get the best most experienced surgical team you can get in your area, if you need to take action. ALso, as soon as his was discovered in a cardiac scan, he was put right onto blood pressure meds to keep the higher pressures from causing the aneurysm to widen further. So far now he’s gone 4 years with no more widening of his 4.4 diameter bulge. Wishing you lots of luck and that you find very capable surgeons to care for you-

Oh and he was also counseled not to do power lifting or anything where you ‘bear down’ hard, as this can put pressure on the aneurysm.

@scottbliz my husband was diagnosed with an Ascending Aorta Aneurysm, with a leaky valve, about 8 years ago. Apparently it showed up in older films, (2006) but, he wasn’t informed. He started around 4.2 and his last was 4.4. So it’s very slow growing. Recently he has been having trouble stabilizing his BP, and off we go to his Cardiologist to see what’s going on. He is seen or tested by his team every 6 months. Good luck.

@dlc1953 Mine was a 3.9 3 years ago and my cardiologist said he probably would never have to do anything about it. They are slowing growing but then the next yr it was 4.1 then 4.4 then boom 4.7 so I was referred to a surgeon. Will see him next week. Thank you for the info

I would recommend starting process to see someone at a high volume aortic surgery hospital in Texas such as Baylor Scott White even before your next appointment.

@chrisn61I'm seeing a good surgeon. I'm willing to take my chances with him. People die in every hospital. So I'm satisfied. Thank you for your response
