Internal body vibrations upon waking

Posted by hkhindle @hkhindle, Mar 29, 2023

For the last week, I have been waking up with my entire feeling internal vibrations. Very uncomfortable, not pain per se. Having your whole body feel like a buzzer is in your body. I have fibromyalgia. My 1st born son has epilepsy. I don’t have health insurance so my health care is minimal. I’m female, 62. When I was 52, a surgeon took out 80% of my colon without my permission. I was under care for my diverticulitis, but now have hypothyroidism. It’s been impossible for me to lose weight, and this week I’ve lost 5 lbs, I have no appetite. It’s very unsettling because it just keeps going like this until I go to bed.

I started a similar thread here about 4 years ago. I have no health issues and don't take any medications. The vibrations started around the time COVID started but I don't think it is related. I also get vibrations in my lower chest or upper abdomen every time just as I am falling asleep and also just as I am waking up. They only last about 10-20 seconds. They were more intense when they first started and they really alarmed me. With no help from the doctors and nothing in my check ups to explain them, I came to the conclusion that they were not harmful and the less anxious I was about them make them less noticeable. I have them every single night and morning without fail still. I believe mine are related to some trigger in the rise and fall of one of the neuro/bio transmitters that are involved in the sleep process. Hope this is helpful .

I've posted here previously but have been quiet recently. Internal vibrations have been linked to COVID (there are scientific articles on line from Yale and a few other places describing this), Vit D deficiency, cortisol and very few other things. All of which can be checked. They are real, as long as we as a group are not confusing them with essential tremor or some other defined neurological condition. I've seen some posts here (and have heard similar from some doctors) from folks that have abruptly stopped meds and then have internal vibrations or have painful conditions/other comorbidities. Some of us (you and I) have no health issues or potential triggers beyond 'coming out of sleep.' I've had every work up that exists it seems like; all to come back as normal or with minor abnormalities that RHUEMs, NEUROs, NEURO-SURG, SLEEP NEUROs, ENDOs and others can not confidently link to internal vibrations upon waking. There is a lack of data in this field and folks at the Mayo Clinic believe that too. I believe as you do that this is neurological or muscular sleep/wake 'glitch' in the system. I've been assured over and over that there is no evidence this is chipping away at my health so I've stopped worrying about it (for now). You and I are aligned.

I have had Covid four times and had four shots. I too have vibrations when I wake up. My sleep is horrible as it is and to wake with my body vibrating is disturbing.

In reply to ederton and sasha2647 I have been trying to figure out this problem I have just like you. I think a lack of proper sleep might be playing a role. As a physician myself and having had this in varying intensity for over 8 yrs now I have experimented with alot of things. One prior post said her vibrations disappeared when she went on nasal CPAP. This would greatly improve her sleep quality. I tried to catch up on sleep by taking a nap and going to bed earlier and have noticed that the vibrations now have almost totally abated. I suggest you try the same and see what results. If not helpful let me know and I have some other possible suggestions as well. I know this seems a bit odd as I am sure all of us have gone through periods of sleep deprivation without getting vibrations in the past but maybe this is something that can come on with age and lack of good sleep. I have investigated this much as you have including checking for sleep apnea and have not found any known medical reason and my colleagues have no idea either. Catching up on sleep has made a big difference I believe but only time will tell as it has not been that long yet. I would appreciate your comments after trying the above.

@edornton my experience is almost identical to yours, except my shakes/vibrations tend to be more focused in my forearms and hands. I also noticed if I’m laying on my back upon wake up, I can feel it across my back sometimes up my neck to the back of the head. Only on occasion have I felt it elsewhere, but on the days that it’s barely there, I will just feel it in my fingertips. Also same, nothing alarming with my primary care doctor, every aspect of bloodwork in normal range aside from B12 (but I’ve always struggled with that deficiency) and neurologist basically said he has no other answers after ruling out any autoimmune, and apparently didn’t feel it warranted a CT scan or anything. I’ve had it happening for 19 months straight now and have a referral for another neurologist that I might follow up with. Taking magnesium glycinate before bed seems to help and staying hydrated and being aware of my sugar intake near bedtime sometimes seems to make a difference, but not always. I agree that it has to be something abnormal within the sleep process (also did a sleep study and determined I have mild apnea, but no proven relation to the vibrations), because I have zero symptoms of anything else for every other waking hour of the day.

@dualtruss
Are your vibrations like shivering when you’re cold? Mine starts early morning 4-6:00am when awakened from dreaming. Used to be nightmares but now just dreams. Starts in my abdomen and radiates to my upper body and arms shaking and my lip quivers if I don’t try to control it.
My sleep is not bad and is better since I stopped wearing my 🍎 smart watch. I was sure that’s what the culprit was but now the shivers came back last night, but I am sleeping better through the night without it somehow.
I’ve had fairly mild Covid 3 or 4 times and just the first two vaccines. Have hypothyroidism been on meds for decades. I’m 73 and otherwise healthy other than this craziness. Hoping for an answer as it is such a scary feeling.

@jlm53 The vibrations initially started as if a cellphone was on vibrate in the middle of my chest. The frequency of the vibration has slowed since then and the intensity as well. I believe it is related to the number of hours of sleep I get, with more than 8 hours sleep necessary to suppress them. Try taking some naps to catch up on your sleep and see if they go away and let me know.

I am new to this. Just joined. I have interior body vibrations in my left upper chest when I wake up. Once I get up it quits. This has happened every morning/never missed a morning for 4 straight years. I have had a brain MRI, seen a neurologist/cardiologist/Rheologist all with no findings no concerns. Neurologist say nothing serious or life threatening, 10% of medical concerns have no diagnosis. Doctors have no concerns with anxiety/stress, and I don’t think either as Life is good other than this scary vibration. It’s one thing to get a diagnosis and understand how to deal/live with their situation. BUT not having a diagnosis for 4 years is very concerning. Any thoughts?

@sasha2647 I have exactly the same happening to me and for about the same length of time. It’s very concerning and I’m tired of worrying about it every single morning when I wake up, until I can get out of bed and start moving around. I try to convince myself it’s a spike in Cortisol but it just feels so unnatural and unsettling. I hope we can eventually find conclusive evidence of the cause and either treat it or find peace with it. Blessings to you.
