Prolia treatment for osteoporosis: What is your experience?
I received the results from my bone test and they have recommended I start Prolia. I have read the side effects and I am concerned. Has anyone use this drug and if so what side effects have you experienced. Thank you

Groin pain after taking my 1st injection of Prolia a year ago lasted for many months. What is it that causes the groin area to ache so badly & not other parts of the body? Sure would like to know the answer to that !
@susan30 pain in the groin area sometimes comes from the hip.
@cherriann, @maggieocary1, This discussion is covering all the bases. There is no easy solution. I tried monthly bisphosphonates and the side effects were debilitating, pain in my rib cage and sternum, up to the jaw, cheekbones and eye sockets. And the problem was exacerbated by the fact that I had a whole month to deal with it and then it hit me again. I wanted something that I could stop immediately if necessary. I am now using Tymlos and of course already wondering about what comes next? Hang in there.......there are many of us in the same "pickle". Be content and at ease. Chris
@maggieocary1 This is the dilemma. According to doctors, only 1 out of 10,000 have bad effects but I'm afraid to be that one! The endocrinologists I have seen and my PCP all say that what can happen without the drugs is worse than what can happen with them. I am putting off my decision until April, I have other things to attend to before that.

@contentandwell I put off taking meds (I am 65) until the rapid and ongoing loss of bone density changed the risk benefit ratio. Suddenly the constant possibility of a hip fracture began to worry me too much. So here I am 3 Prolia injections later, with very good results but not so great g.i. side effects and also this new kind of chest muscular pain. Not unbearable, but unpleasant.
I know that it isn’t easy to be the one that has side effects, but be encouraged that many more don’t. I have been on bisphosphonate for a year and a half, along with added calcium and vitamin D. Not a single bad effect except a little bone ache for one day after treatment. My husband has the very same regimen, and he does not even have the ache.
I am not presently on Prolia, but did take it for a number of years without any noticeable side effects.
After stopping Prolia, what are you doing now for your bone density & is it helping stabilize your T-score ?
@sue225 I am 72 and have already had a fracture. Fortunately, it was relatively minor -- "minimally displaced". I'm scared of another though and living here in the northeast I am very afraid of being on ice. So far it's been a relatively mild winter so I haven't had to face that. I told my PCP that if I got to my health club and had to park far from the entrance I would turn around and leave. He's sort of a fitness nut so he gave me a handicapped tag and told me to absolutely not use it for anything else! The thing is he knows me pretty well and he knows that I actually would not.

Well, it’s a bit of a complicated story which included a broken foot followed by daily injections of Tymlos (which seemed to be going well). However, I started getting excessive aches and pains, so my endocrinologist temporarily stopped all medication until the rheumatologist determines underlying cause of pain. It is appearing to be degenerative disc disease in neck, spine, hands , and feet, although I have not yet gotten any final outcomes from the initial tests. My T scores were stable before all this started, but we haven’t tested them lately.
