Prolia treatment for osteoporosis: What is your experience?
I received the results from my bone test and they have recommended I start Prolia. I have read the side effects and I am concerned. Has anyone use this drug and if so what side effects have you experienced. Thank you

A T-score of -2.5 or lower qualifies as osteoporosis. A T-score of -1.0 to -2.5 signifies osteopenia, meaning below-normal bone density without full osteoporosis, so looks like you are right on the line. In addition to Calcium and D, I take Magnesium, Vitamin K2-4 and Boron. all important for calcium absorption. I couldn't find K2-4 on the shelf at the drugstore, but it was available on Amazon. Did you join "Osteoporosis: Myths & Facts" on Facebook? Just relax for now and absorb as much information as you can. It can be confusing, but in time you will be able to make some sense of it all.. There are also good sources of exercises for osteoporosis on YouTube, particularly a couple of physical therapists who not only know what they are doing, but they are also funny.
Please tell us how to find these support groups you are waiting to hear from. I also would definitely like to join. From Susan Vallejo
@susan30 There are support groups on Facebook. I just typed the word 'Prolia' in the Facebook search field and several groups popped up. You have to answer a couple of questions and wait to get accepted into the private group. It didn't take but about an hour for both of my requests to be approved. Then just read through posts, ask questions, encourage someone else with your experiences, etc. Also search 'Osteoporosis' and you will find several groups there as well.
@mabel343 Thanks for all the additional info. I have not joined the group you mentioned but will do that shortly.
@cubbysgirl what support groups did you subscribe to? I’d like to do that. I went to a PT that specializes in osteoporosis. She has been a wealth of information!
@cubbysgirl thanks for the info. I should have read this before I asked you this same question earlier.
I had no side effects. I got a shot every six months.
It did me no good. My Dexascan is worse. 6 years on Prolia. The Drs are testing me to why I don’t absorb vitamin D. Best of luck.
What was your T-score when you had your 1st Prolia ?....and T-score after 6 yrs ?
I'm troubled about taking Prolia....so many have had problems & yet many claim its helped their bone density.
My hip is -2.9
@susan30 You are right a lot of people hate what it has done to them but on the other hand it has helped some All the post on here are,nt in favor but its your decision My friend had osteoporosis but had one shot of a different med for her bones she had a bad reaction so didn't take anymore instead she went for the weight training swimming Vit D3 at the time her endocrinologist put her on 50,000 mg her D was so low but now she takes 10,000mg , calcium and magnesium and her osterporosis is under control . But in the long end its up to you what you want to do.
Thx for your comments ..... Diagnosed 2 mos ago with Osteoporosis. GP dr suggested Prolia.
Have taken calcium w mag / zinc/ D3 for years. I started taking Algae Cal (4 gel caps a day) ordered out of Vanc BC (has boron & K2 in it). Has good reviews re helping building bone density.
I also have microscopic lymphocytic colitis diagnosed 1 yr ago - gastro doc put me on Budesonide 8 wks on / 8 off. Then switched me to Azathioprine at the lowest dose. In my research I read those RXs thin bone density. I'm off the Azathioprine by choice. Those 2 RX's calm the bad diarrhea that comes with Colitis. Up until taking those RXs I had pretty strong bones. I'm in ND so only 2 Endocrinologists are in the state 400 miles away from me so I'm looking to go to Billings MT to meet with an Endo dr there & get their opinion how to cope with Colitis & my diagnosis of Osteoporosis. They fight against each other if I stay on Budesonide & try to build bone density at the same time....grrrr
