Prolia treatment for osteoporosis: What is your experience?

Posted by Veruska @veriska, Mar 7, 2017

I received the results from my bone test and they have recommended I start Prolia. I have read the side effects and I am concerned. Has anyone use this drug and if so what side effects have you experienced. Thank you

@smtamt

Are you talking about Prolia? How old are you? what is the T-score of your A P spine and hips?

Jump to this post

Yes, this discussion is about Prolia. I am 75 and my T-scores are: Spine: -3.4. Hips: -2.3. The spine had worsened after 12 months on Prolia while the hip shows an improvement.

Perhaps teriparatide may possibly improve your spine's bone density.

Had you been on any other osteoporosis therapies prior to prolia? If this is your first therapy, I think that one year is too soon too see a consistent improvement. My doctor waited 2-2/2 years to do a DEXA after putting me on prolia. I was diagnosed with severe osteoporosis at the age of 40 and it took 18 years for me to get from osteoporosis to osteopenia. I need to find the copy of my last DEXA to see what my scores were. Treating osteoporosis rarely results in a quick steFy improvement in bone density.

I was on Fosamax for years, and have taken Evista for 20-25 years. While Evista perhaps has not been effective in stopping bone loss, it was recommended that I continue by my oncologist, as I am a breast cancer survivor.

@ritafarmer How long you have been with Prolia? Did your see any noticeable improvement in bone density in your spine and hips? is prolia effective in reducing hip fracture?

@mabel343 Evista treatment is back dated. Have you not gone with Prolia?

REPLY

Yes, I have had three Prolia injections, the most recent this past June. I am not sure what you mean by backdated, but I have continued Evista (raloxifene) for breast cancer risk at the recommendation on my oncologist due to having had breast cancer in the past.

@mabel343 How old are you? Have you done BMD Test? How is your T-score now for your AP spine and hips? Have you gained some bone mass in your hips?

REPLY

I am 75. I have had regular BMD tests for a number of years. Between May 2017 and May 2018, I gained in my hips but lost in the spine. T-scores are: Spine: -3.4. Hips: -2.3.

@smtamt

is stopping of Prolia induces rebound fracture? Can you provide the link of the Facebook where problems on osteoporosis are discussed?

smtamt: I am too new a member to be allowed to post a link. I tried, but no go. If you go to Facebook and search osteoporosis you will see all the different groups listed. You can choose one or all to join. I joined them all wanting to be as prepared and informed as possible! They are "closed" groups, so in theory your posts are not public.
