Prolia treatment for osteoporosis: What is your experience?

Posted by Veruska @veriska, Mar 7, 2017

I received the results from my bone test and they have recommended I start Prolia. I have read the side effects and I am concerned. Has anyone use this drug and if so what side effects have you experienced. Thank you

I have received one injection of Prolia and I am struggling with constipation to the point where I am not willing to continue with the Prolia. My doctor dismisses constipation and back pain as non side effects of Prolia. I have had long standing constipation uses d/t taking an antidepressant, hypothyroidism, statin drugs. I have seen a gastroenterologist with suggestions for fiber. Fiber makes it worse. I am taking miralax. Has anyone else suffered from this?

The bottom of each email notification should contain a blue box that has VIEW & REPLY in it. This is important because sometimes email notifications are not always the full post due to length, and by clicking VIEW & REPLY and going to the full discussion, it is easier to know where you are in the conversation and who you are replying to. I have attached a photo that shows the box I am talking about in the email notifications. (I had to repost this message as I attached the wrong photo)

What are the differences between an oral biphosphonate such as Fosamax and Prolia. Is it problems with gerd, ulcers in the stomach? What other differences beside weekly oral med or 6-month injection? I'm very afraid to start any drug. Have - 3.4 in spine and some form of inflammatory arthritis. How important is it to start. Could osteo be managed through diet and exercise?

I will be having my fourth shot this next week, so far I do not have any side effects. Prolia does have a copay card available to help with cost of shots.

My doctors are recommending Prolia due to my severe osteoporosis. I have recently had a compression fracture, so treatment is very necessary. I'm also on Raloxifene as a breast cancer preventative and am wondering if Prolia and Raloxifene can be taken together. Do you happen to know? So glad you did not have any side effects.

Sorry, I do not know the answer to this question.

I am currently on my 3rd year of Prolia. I have NO side effects. I ended up switching doctors after approximately 15 years because of insurance problems/non reimbursements. I was 'freaked' out of my comfort zone and in the middle of treatment. I saw a new endocrinologist who agreed with the treatment as I have Systemic Mastocytosis and have had multiple fractures as well. I will continue on Prolia this year (June/May injections). See the endocrinologist and have my 1st DEXA scan after the start of Prolia. We may return to the 2 year Forteo as I had incredible results from that several years ago. I would highly recommend Prolia if needed.

I was on Bonviva for 2 years and it didn't work. I started Prolia in January. So far the only side effects I notice are the same I had with Bonviva... stiffness in my hips and knees when I sit for a long time or first thing in the morning. I am 53 and have just started testing to see if they can discover a cause for my Osteoporosis.

Thank you so very much for the Prolia information. My doctor told me yesterday that he wanted to start me on this. Several years ago I took the Fotteo for two years, but since my bones are still so thin, he wants to try me on Prolia. Thank you to everyone who has information on this drug, it will definitely make all of our decision so much easier.

smtamt you may want to contact Prolia staff by telephone to discuss. They would be glad to answer questions and/or provide pamphlets. 1-877-776-1002. It has the potential to rebuild bone. Give a try.

I continue to receive Prolia injections 2x/year. I have had no side effects whatsoever. I do understand the questioner's concerns because the listed side effects are horrendous. My doctor's reassurance convinced me to try it & I am happy that I did.
