How long do side effects from statins last once you stop taking them?
I have been taking 20mg of Lipitor for almost 2 years and have felt yucky since shortly after starting. My cardiologist allowed me to go off one week and I did not see a difference. He also cut back daily to three times a week. I ache all over - neck, back, hips, knees, elbows, and legs are weak. Recently had a normal CK test, but PCP said we might consider a trial off statins since I am below 200 now. Has anyone stopped taking statins and saw a significant decrease in muscle pain, and if so, how long did it take?

Can you change cardiologist? I have changed providers when I did not think I was getting the care and information I needed.
Did your cardiologist put you on Co-Q-10 when he/she prescribed Atorvastin? It is known to cause muscle pain. Co-Q-10 is known to helped with that pain. It seems the statin drugs somehow affect the level of Co-Q-10 (comes from my heart failure doctor).
I am not familiar nor have taken Ezetimbe. Is that brand or generic? What was purpose? Have you looked up the side affects of Ezetimbe? If you look up statin you will see the mention of muscle pain. This usually goes away for many like me when taking Co-Q-10 but takes a while.
The mental stress of your anxiety is surely not going to help. I would seek to get a second opinion or see different cardiologist. Do you have access to a major medical facility that you could drive to? I used to drive 4 hours each way to go to Mayo Jacksonville as did not think my local cardioloigist had the expereince and skills for my medical conditions.
I now live 20 minutes away from Mayo.
@jc76 Ezetimibe is a common cholesterol medication. The brand name is Zetia. It lowers LDL in a different way than a statin. Adding ezetimibe to a statin can reduce LDL another 15 percent. In fact, you get a better effect adding ezetimibe than you do by doubling the statin dose.

2 ReactionsGood to know. Did Zetia come with side effects like a statin? It could be the source of the pain and maybe the combination exasperated it.
I take 40 mg of Astorstatin. It really reduced my LDL to below 90. I also take fish oil which cut my triglycerides levels in half.
My wife was put on a statin and had muscle pains. Contacted her doctors and asked about Co-Q-10. They said try it. It did help her but took some time. She does not have the significant pain she did. It might be something to talk to your doctors about to see if applicable to you.
@jc76 I tried all that stuff. Zetia gave me the same pains, or might have been left over from statins. Still take fish oil and COQ10. Tried Repatha also and had a flu like reaction. I’m done.

1 Reaction@roderick1009 Hang in there. I suffered with statins for 2 years before my doctors listened and gave me their permission to stop. It took at least 2 months for the pains to get significantly better. Keep moving, use heat or ice, stretch. It should get better in time.

The story sounds familiar and Dr's for some reason don't want to associate our pain and issues with the statin prescribed. I am at 2 and a half months off Atorvastatin and I want to believe I am getting better. I do take 400 mg of COQ10 each day and try to somehow excercise each day too.
The people on this site have been lifesaver, both physically and mentally. Good luck

1 Reaction@jc76 The Ezetimbe is another Cholesterol medication, but i think that's the cause of my lower back burning when i stood up for more than 5 minutes or walked anywhere. And yes i am seeing a Eternal medicine doctor now, he prescribed me the CoQ10 I've take for only 4 days now. I feel like my tendons in my knees and Archilles are not as painful but my legs and back are still burning and tired i have to still rest them and walk in short distances. So the Tendons are a positive for me so far. You know I just cant believe these doctors these days and how they ignore you and dent that something so life altering and painful.. that they just act like its nothing at all... and the funny think is i did 3 cholesterol checks and the family doctor and the eternal medicine doctor said my cholesterol was fine, but this heart doctor said no you need to be on these .. nothing about changing my diet or exorcising more, just take two of these 2 times a day and be bed ridden the rest of your life.

My wife has back pain. She was diagnosed with fibromyalgia. The inflamation and heighten pain sensitivity is something I had not had to deal with. She has my complete empathy as in the past I had herniated disk pain in my back and had the most excruciating pain I have ever experienced.
We all need to find something that works for us. What works for one will not work for another. Taking medications always has some form of side effects. You can see from the posts all over the place with individuals post different side effects and degrees. That is why our doctor should treat the patient not statistics.
