How long do side effects from statins last once you stop taking them?
I have been taking 20mg of Lipitor for almost 2 years and have felt yucky since shortly after starting. My cardiologist allowed me to go off one week and I did not see a difference. He also cut back daily to three times a week. I ache all over - neck, back, hips, knees, elbows, and legs are weak. Recently had a normal CK test, but PCP said we might consider a trial off statins since I am below 200 now. Has anyone stopped taking statins and saw a significant decrease in muscle pain, and if so, how long did it take?

1 ReactionHi. I hope you are feeling better. Can you tell me what worked and how long it finally took?
@ctjoe7 it took a number of months and was gradual. Stopping all cholesterol lowering drugs and being patient have me back to normal. However, my numbers went up.

2 ReactionsThank you and good to hear.
Some days or part of days, I feel good. Other times, the body aches and leg tiredness are difficult.
It's been 2 and a half months off. Basically just living on tylenol and COQ10 and trying to excercise in some form each day.
Did you do anything else see?
Thank you again.

1 Reaction@ctjoe7 it's been quite a while now since that weaning. I don't think it even took three weeks because of my low dosage (5 mg). you wouldn't think that lower dosage could do as much as it did but I was off the statins for only three months. When I did my next blood work, my triglycerides skyrocketed. I immediately went back on the statins. Two months later, they were already under control again. I was really certain I was going to be able to go without them, especially since my diet is really healthy and my weight loss of 35 pounds took me down to 140. Neither of those things helped as much as I thought they would. Good luck with your journey!

1 Reaction@ctjoe7 Moving! Dance and yoga classes, walking a lot, choosing to take stairs! It was a slow process of improvement. Heat or ice help when you have pain. Stretches. I have never heard that statin related pain is permanent after you stop.

One thing I have noticed about my triglycerides over the years is they fluctuate greatly. On statins, off statins.... Big ups and downs. Also, when I first stopped statins, my cholesterol actually went down a bit as well as those. Last blood test, both were high again. I just don't know. I just keep soldering on with exercise and a good diet. Taking some supplements and hoping for the best.

Thank you for your message.
I am hoping for getting back to "normal" hopefully sometime soon.
Best of luck to you.
The Cardiologist put me om 80 MG of Atorvastin and 10 MG of Ezetimbe , its been about 18 months of suffering, I had no clue what was going on I cant get up my stairs without terrible pain, I cant walk a block without my calves and hamstrings burning my tendons in my knees and Achilles tendon and lower back are so painful it just feels like Burning...I cant travel, cant go to any events .. its tough to just get to my car and I had no clue what was going on i asked the cardio doc if these meds have something to do with me all of a sudden in pain and not being able to walk? he changed the subject, I went back 6 months later I asked again 3 times and he finally said well I think you have arthritis .. I am sure its these 2 medications, when they put me on this i was never in pain before.. i stopped 4 days ago, I do not feel any better yet, I read the other day it takes 2 weeks but now after reading on here I am worried I am not going to get much better and really worried and having anxiety that its taken me this long to discover what's damaged me like this.
