Chronic salty taste

Posted by bel59 @bel59, May 31, 2024

Hello
Has or is anyone experiencing intense & chronic salty taste in the mouth? If so have you gained any relief or insight from any type of practitioner. I am a long term sufferer and it is a very mentally debilitating condition.
Thx Bel

@celia16 Hey, what vitamin had you been deficient for? Good nutrition and staying hydrated is the key of course. But sometimes after all that, you don’t get any answers to your problems. That’s when you get frustrated, specially when you’re brushed off by the doctor. That said 😄 I have some autoimmune problems, so next time I visit my rheumatologist I’ll ask her about this. Thanks.

@munira12, neurologist diagnosed me with B12 deficiency. He thought I had been sufficiently low to cause my symptoms. I also had tingling, numbness, fasciculations, hair loss, loss of smell, internal tremors, etc. So….idk, was it all related to my post covid syndrome? Idk. My first neurologist said not neuropathy, as has several orthos, but……I’m not sure. Trying to stay healthy and follow up with spine scan sometime soon. Keeping an open mind.

Yes, it definitely is a mentally debilitating condition. I have it at least for 4/5 years. Getting more intense as time passes. No doctor could tell me what it is. Anyway I found out that staying hydrated is crucial. And another thing is Ricola sugar free cough drops. They’re a life saver.
Wish you good luck 👍

@munira12, mine is a chronic and often overwhelming 'salty' taste. I am concerned that, if I try them, the Ricola cough drops may be too acidic making them impossible to keep in my mouth. What do you think?

@bel59 My salty taste is also chronic and it’s almost always there. Lately it has become so very intense that it’s unbearable. My only solution is that cough drop. I have some issues with acid reflux but it’s not for the drops. It’s there for sometime. Those drops don’t bother. My suggestion is no harm trying. Praying for you.

There was a period where I used drops and sugarless bubblegum a lot. It gave me brief periods of relief. Eventually, I stopped using them. I still keep the gum around.

I have had a chronic salty and sour taste for exactly one year now. I have been to several specialists and no matter what they suggest it does not help. It started slowly and got worse last fall. I've tried over the counter products to moisturize my mouth and two different prescriptions to increase saliva but saliva production doesn't seem to be the problem. The ENT and dentist see no abnormalities. I went to a rheumatologist who suggested Gabapentin in case is a neurological issue but that is not helping at all and the GI doctor's RX for acid reflux did nothing either. The only way I get through the day is by chewing gum, using sugar free Ricola drops and using Listerene Zero Alcohol (which sometimes gives me a half hour relief). I have never had something so debilitating.

@munira12 Thank you .. I'm going to give the cough drops a go. As you say - no harm in trying. I am pretty much prepared to try anything and everything as, like most of the contributors here, seen multiple doctors and therapists with no positive outcomes. My health otherwise is generally pretty reasonable so gladly not concerned about any collateral effects. Will report back once I've tried the cough drops for a short time. Best wishes to all.

@neisie13 Hey, we share your pain and anxiety. Because there is no respite from this thing (apart from being asleep) and the gradual worsening it's hard to fathom just where I/we will end up. Has anyone tried hypnosis? Don't know how/if this might help (perhaps psychosomatic) but have tried everything else so why not. Best wishes.

@bel59 Thank you for responding. Yes, it is so frustrating going from doctor to doctor without an answer. Many have said to just drink more and that will solve it but it is definitely not related to how much I drink. I have thought about acupuncture but not hypnosis. Best wishes to you too!!

@neisie13 Thank you ... just for information I drink about 2 litres of icy water everyday as it is the only thing which gives me some relief from 'salty' as I'm drinking but no lasting relief. I have tried acupuncture without success so hypnotherapy is about the only thing I haven't tried. Best wishes again in your endeavours to find any sort of resolution.

@bel59 I'll have to try the icy water to see if that helps me too. My husband recommended trying the acupuncture since he is so frustrated too with how I am feeling but I am not surprised to hear that it didn't help. Let me know if you decide to do the hypnotherapy and if it helps. Have you been to an oral surgeon? By the end of the day the tip of my tongue is red and irritated and that is making things worse. I think it's from all the miserable tastes that I have all day and I was thinking that maybe there is a rinse that would at least help that. Best wishes again to you too.
