Any success stories about Evenity to share with fearful me?

Posted by callmekate @callmekate, Aug 23 8:57pm

After acquiring 2 compression fractures, I am biting the bullet and going for my first Evenity shot in 2 days. I am afraid of everything from heart palpitations (I have AFIB) to muscle spasms and joint pain and everything else . Has anyone been ok on the shots? Or only had minor issues? I would love to read encouraging words. My REMS scores were ok: hip -1.0, spine -1.2, but my DEXA scores were much worse: hip -2.8, spine-4.8, so I feel I have little choice now. Many thanks.

Has anyone gone from taking Tymlos and having good results to Evenity? My doctor has mentioned going to Reclast and saving Evenity if Tymlos results are good.

I was in Osteoporosis when I started Evenity. Took 12 shots over one year with no side effects at all. Had a new bone scan at the end and I am now well into the central osteopenia range! I am 69 yrs old and a kidney and liver transplant patient. My back no longer hurts which was worth the risk for me.
I have since had one Reclast infusion with no side effects ( I did drink tons of water before and for a week after)
Best of luck to you!

Hi Jane,
thanks for your post. Did you take the reclast infusion 30 days after last Evenity shot or did you give it a month in between?
Also what other options were offered to you and is there a reason you opted to do reclast?

I have just completed 12 months of Evenity treatment, and like you went on it due to concern about spinal fractures. My T score went from -3.5 to -2.51. The first 6-7 months were difficult as the major amount of bone growth is happening rapidly. The term "growing pains" usually attributed to kids is perhaps how to view it in an accelerated way.

I did have knee swelling and joint pain that was very challenging until month 7 and then the pain dissipated. The first five months it literally kept me up at night. I decided to stay with it as the risks to my spine would pose a greater level of pain and disability if a fracture were to occur due to Osteoporosis.

Hope this helps. It's not easy but outcome was worth it.

You have mentioned something that I've been thinking about for awhile now. Growing pains. What should we expect to experience once these drugs are in our systems and begin the positive work they have been created to do. It seems reasonable to me that there are bound to be aches and pains and general discomfort while they do their work. The issue seems to be how to distinguish between those pains that are in service to us and those that signal danger to our bodies. Id love to know how others handle this. My endocrinologist has never spoken about this but I think it would have been helpful to me.

I associate growing pains with a period of rapid growth, notf normal growth. Therefore, I never experienced those pains and don't see why I should experience them now.

Had my endocrinologist been clearer about side effects it would have made other decisions along the way easier to make. I feel like in my self advocacy process she learned more from me about the side effects than I did from her. If you have any knee joint issues prior to taking the Evenity, you can expect them to be worse for the first 6 months of the program. They ease up somewhat after that time. The majority of the bone growth occurs through month 6 as evidenced by the CQT results of L1-L2 performed prior to starting and at 3 and 6 months intervals based on my requests for the testing.
Her initial reassurances that none of her clients had reported side effects left me dubious but I did proceed with the program.
I would have been happier with a doc who relied less on drug company data from studies and more on surveys from actual clients. Perhaps I expect too much from today's physicians.

None here. I would never use Evenity again. Lost my ambulation, severe arthritic pain in hands, hips and a developed cortical thickening lesion? On my left femur. Has anyone else experienced a femur cortical thickening after Evenity. Test are still out and no one knows how to tx pain in left femur. MRI soon. Evenity has ruined my life. Density results still out til Dec.

I am so sorry you have such servere rections to Evenity. I pray you get the skilled support you need to recover.

I am on Evenity ( after tymlos) and it is working well for me and without any limiting side effects.... We are all so different and what works for one person is a problem for another. Again I am sorry, but for me the Evenity is a life saver and has given me my ambulation back - I can now walk better after 8 fractueres in both my feet had me on cruthes for an extended time.

How a doc assesses mediciance for a patinet is very important. I would not take a medicine without at least 3 opioinons and your own instinct.

Prayers to you for finidng what you need to get your health stable.

I thought I would lobby to get Evenity for myself instead of the Reclast my endocrinologist recommends. However, after you mentioned the knee issues, I might have to rethink about my position. I get joint pain (not enough to prevent me from golfing and walking a lot), but I wouldn’t want it to get any worse than now. This is the reason I love to read this blog; it is informative, and as you mentioned, it’s real life issues, not statistics based on a trial program.

The knee pain and swelling of the joint eases a bit after month 6. By month 11-12 there was no more swelling or joint pain. Months 6-11 would say the first 10 days into the month were challenging. The last 20 days of the month generally improve.

I am pain free at the end of shot 12. I did a lot of PT in between to strengthen muscles that support the knees.

In retrospect, I am glad I did it. Next step will be reclast infusion for me to lock in the growth of the bone.
Hope I won't need another infusion for 3 years. Chose this over Prolia for that reason.

I would also love to hear the answer to this. I’ve had good results on Tymlos (lumbar spine improved from -2.7 to -1.5), so why wouldn’t I want to keep the improvement going with Evenity before locking everything in with Reclast?
