Black coffee and plain tea OK during fast?

Posted by amidn @amidn, Aug 14, 2025

Having nothing but water during a fast is tough (and hard when I have to work). I've ready that plain black coffee and plain teas (black, green and herbal like peppermint) won't break a fast. But, I'd like to understand whether that's accurate. Thank you.

Hi @amidn, Welcome to Connect. I think anything without sugar or sweeteners, calories or carbs is OK during a fast. Here's a good list of stuff to avoid and stuff that is OK - https://fastingwell.com/drinks-while-fasting/. I drink black coffee and various herbal teas, including peppermint.

I found that using an app on my phone made it easier to track my intermittent fasting. Do you use an app on your mobile device to track the fasting time?

Thank you, @johnbishop, especially for the link! No, I've not used an app; is there one you recommend? I've also read a bit about fasting-mimicking diets. Any thoughts on that? Thank you!

Hi @amidn, I use the free version of the Zero app - https://zerolongevity.com/. I had not heard of the fasting-mimicking diets but it does sound interesting although I would definitely not like missing some meat. I eat a very limited amount of red meat but do like chicken.
