use of aerobika long term and vest
Hi everyone,
I have a big decision to make. I have a smartvest for less than 2 months, it seems to do nothing for me. I stopped using it. But I think it has to do something. It is handy to have in case I need to use it. But I have to pay about $1500 out of pocket. So it seems to me to return it now and buy it again if in the future I do decide to try again. My question to you is, when you are weak, do you still have the strength to use aerobika? Aerobika and nebulizer help me better now. I just don't know if there is a day that I don't have the strength to use aerobika. Based on the people in the support group, there are some healthy and strong 80 year old people still using aerobika. Your input is greatly appreciated.
Thanks and take care!
Ling

Thank you very much for sharing. What a great experience you had. You could take a spin class, that is impressive. My last infection changed my health a great deal, I have trouble breathing often, not sure what it is. I believe that the vest has to do something, it is nice you noticed that it is working for you.
Thanks again.

2 ReactionsThank you and I am sorry you are having trouble. The difference the vest made for me did surprise me. I had no idea that stuff must have been building up in my smaller airways because it happens silently, slowly over time. It's taken about 3 months of using the vest again to get out what I took to be the "old" stuff. I am glad I listened to my body and tried the vest again. I didn't realize before that it really was helping even though it seemed not to be doing anything.
Do you use a vest? What differences have you noticed since your last infection?
Lin a word of warning- once insurance approves the vest it might not be approved after you return it. Somebody mentioned it here.
Thank you very much for the additional information. I am glad it works for you. I do believe it should do something. My pulmonologist thinks that I can either use aerobika or the vest, and they should work the same. I don't see an obvious result using a vest. But I think it is nice to have it around. Which vest do you use, how long each session? Do you do other airway clearance techniques besides using a vest?
Thanks again!Ling
It seems you have to take whichever vest insurance will give you, so I have the Afflovest and use it for about 20 minutes. I also do the Airway Clearance app guide on my phone, followed by postural drainage and huff coughing.
That is what I am doing too, autogenic drainage followed by the vest. I use smartvest.
Hope you continue to do great!

1 ReactionI hope so and work hard to keep this disease in check but it ALWAYS keeps me guessing. Just when you think you've got it figured out it decides to smack you one! 🙂
Take care and hang in there. Most of us are women and we're tough!

5 ReactionsHi Ling,
Responding to your question as to whether you will have the strength to use the Aerobika down the road. I started AWC protocol early in 2023 and chose the Aeorobika because it is sturdy and easy to clean. During the last 2 1/2 years, I'm not at all concerned about not being able to use it going forward.
I just turned 79 a few months ago and all good.

4 ReactionsSpin class is like an airway clearance exercise for me. I choose a bike in the back, where there is a ledge. I bring a little cup and paper towels with me because I cough a lot out during the class! I don't think anyone is noticing me because it is dark and loud in there!
I just wished I enjoyed it more so I would do it more often. I work on my rebounder (mini-trampoline) at home for cardio. That's a lot of fun but I don't cough like I do in spin class.

3 ReactionsI'm not sure if the vest helps or not, but I use every available resource just in case. I take the NAC, mullein, use the vest, Aerobika, use the Autogenic Drainage app, drink lots of plain water, eat healthy and do cardio and weight lifting. If you have the vest and it's not hurting, why not continue to use it?
By the way, I bought a chin up bar that you put in the doorway (no tools - super easy). It took me almost six weeks to do one pullup and another month to get up to two. I can still only do two. But every time I go through that doorway, I attempt a pull-up or chin-up. So it's often 6-10 times a day that I am doing something toward my upper body strength. I like Linda Esposito's advice on "exercise snacking" - just doing a little exercise throughout the day.
