Is MAC D inevitable with bronchiectasis
I never knew anything about MAC D everyone keeps writing about until I got on this website. The only thing I knew when I was diagnosed a year ago was that my Pulmonary Doc said he was every happy I did not have an infection after he did a culture. I had no idea what that culture was for. Now for my question. Does everyone with bronchiectasis eventually end up with MacD?

Thank you Sue.
When the RT helped me to produce a specimen she looked at the vile and looked specifically for a mucus plug(s) in my testable sample. I have thought for over a year now that I needed to have a good mucus plug for testing. Good to know that "you only need to produce mucus".
Fortunately all my specimens have been accepted and they all had a mucus plug in them. So now I don't have to work so hard, so to speak, to bring up a mucus plug(s) for testing along with the mucus.
To share good news, my mucus plugs went from deep green in 2022 to a very pale yellow after starting air way clearance in 2023.
Hope you have had a good summer so far. A bit too hot however here in OKC.

2 ReactionsI can relate to "a bit too hot" - we are experiencing one of our "tropical" summers - whenever the temp rises above 82F, the humidity rises with it. And we keep have poor air quality days due to drifting smoke from Canadian wildfires.
This morning (maybe for another hour) I am enjoying open windows and the sound of birds and my backyard fountain before I get closed in again by the AC. All I can say is that I am glad we have solar panels or my electric bill would be as high as my grocery bill.
I am so happy to hear how airway clearance has helped you - being able to avoid the antibiotic regimen is a blessing - one that you have earned with your hard work at airway clearance. Do you find the routine getting easier and less time consuming as you progress and discover a few "shortcuts"?
Yes, with reading and hearing from "you all" (this New Jersey Yankee learned that one being here in OKC, 'you all') on Mayo I feel more comfortable with the decisions I have made about the time spent with nebulizing and disinfecting of the items we have available to use with air way clearance. Keeping a set routine is somewhat difficult with all the things that pop up in the day that were unexpected but overall, so far, all is working. Thanks for asking
My 55 year old tub/shower plumbing broke, flooded the hardwood floor...so....the dealings with plumber, tile installer, insurance people and flooring people begin. Oh and drywall installer and painter will be needed also. So with my 50+ years of 'been there done that'I will take it in stride. .
No solar panels here but wish I did have them, good for you two to have done that. What I did do was to plan plantings to block the sun from hitting the brick of the house and lots of attic insulation. Also helps that I am comfortable with a setting close to 80 degress....you know us 'elderly' get cold easily. That keeps the system from having to work long. As we have learned each stage/age in life has it's "pluses" and "minuses."
Yes, I understand the words "closed in." So many reasons for that including what happens as we age and develop unexpected health problems....BE and Eczema here at this point in time. I know you understand that considering all you have been kind enough to share about your health and that of your husbands.
Much like yourself it is the yard/landscaping, my sanctuary, the birds, the rabbits and the squirrels that help get me through the day and weeks etc. Enjoy the day.

I have tried to locally get Tobramycin with no success. Any suggestions?
20-30% of bronchiectasis patients get some type of NTM according to the literature. Pseudomonas is as many as 35%.
If your Dr prescribes it you get it from a pharmacy. What do you mean when you say you could not get it locally? It is covered by Part B Medicare if you are on medicare. But some people cannot tolerate it while others seem to.
Publix and Walgreens made me wait and could not tell me when the would get it. Being brand new to this disease I had no idea, maybe it was a hard to get drug. However, I ended all that checking with Amazon Pharmacy and they had it and still do without any issues.

Great for you! Amazon Pharmacy is not in my Rx network, so I don't know what I will do of my local stops carrying it for me - they said they just have 3 patients using it, so it takes a few days to come from the warehouse - I can live with that.
The pharmacist said Tobramycin was a compounded drug and they cannot handle it. Publix is not near us and Walgreens has limited hours and I do not want to start getting scrpts from there.
