How long do side effects from statins last once you stop taking them?

Posted by con123 @con123, Jul 30, 2024

I have been taking 20mg of Lipitor for almost 2 years and have felt yucky since shortly after starting. My cardiologist allowed me to go off one week and I did not see a difference. He also cut back daily to three times a week. I ache all over - neck, back, hips, knees, elbows, and legs are weak. Recently had a normal CK test, but PCP said we might consider a trial off statins since I am below 200 now. Has anyone stopped taking statins and saw a significant decrease in muscle pain, and if so, how long did it take?

Some of us are statin intolerant. I learned this over a two year misery of trying different ones, dosages, zeros, Repatha. Quality of life limiting myalgias. I’m done.

I started to feel muscle aches after I started statins. My cardiologist said that these side effects were going to disappear after 1-2 weeks. Wrong. The muscle pain increased to a level where I needed to lay down in bed and rest because I could not stand for long periods of times. My back started to ache, and I felt my legs heavy after exercise. I stopped the statin, and I have not taken it for two months now. My aches are still there. I did my research on statins and how they affect the body. I was so surprised to see that every single study concludes that it is true that statins cause muscle issues and that in many patients the data indicates that rhabdomyolysis has occurred. The normal cholesterol level is up to 200mg/dl and as soon a cardiologist sees that your cholesterol is 210...and boom!! they prescribe a statin, and I think that is wrong. Cholesterol is needed for brain function too. As a matter of fact, I had foggy brain issues while taking statin and statins could cause that too. Today I still feel muscle aches and my labs have been normal including that I no longer have foggy brain. I am following a strict Mediterranean diet, I don't drink alcohol, no sodas, only water; exercise every day, no red meats and no sweets, only in special occasions, I eat just a bit of cake or ice cream. So far, I am dealing well with my muscle aches and back pain, and I hope these could go away. In the meantime, I am not taking any cholesterol meds. (This is my personal opinion. Before stopping any medication consult your doctor.) Be well

I agree. It took months for the muscle aches to finally go away, not a week or two. I had been given brief breaks from statins to see if they resolved but I needed longer time off of them. My cholesterol had been over 200 since my late 40's and no one mentioned statins until 20 years later. Some of us are simply statin intolerant and need to be taken seriously. I am finally off all lipid lowering meds and feel so much better. It is hard to believe that it took 2 years of suffering to be taken seriously. "you are just getting older and you get aches" was a common excuse. NOT. I'm trying beta sistosterol and hoping for the best.

I tried a couple of statins and symptoms snuck up on me for the second. Terrible muscle pain and brain fog. I would say it took a month to fully recover, but felt better in a week. I have high LP (a) which is clogging my arteries so my DR wants me to keep my LDA below 30. I am taking this very seriously to try to avoid getting vascular dementia and strokes which my parents had, as well as other relatives. I am a pescatarian. I take Nexletol and Zetia to slow the cholesterol by attacking in both the liver and intestines. I also take Benecol chocolates, but I wish they didn't have so much sugar. Listen to lipidologist Dr Thomas Dayspring. He has much good info. All the best to you.

After 2-1/2 years of taking statins (5 all together) & having Lot's of Side Effects to Each & Every One, my Cardiologist finally suggested I Simply STOP taking statins & see a Cardiac Surgeon in their Practice. So I did. He told me I NEED to have a Watchman surgery, explained what it is, & went to his computer to schedule it. I Told Him, "STOP". Tell Me More about the Procedure-A to Z, & Why the Watchman is So Critical. "1st you go to Radiology & have a 3D cta, then we schedule the procedure." I told him "I'll have the 3D, cta, THEN I'LL DECIDE If I'll have Surgery" (My thought: No Surgeries 'till I get a 2nd Opinion). The Lab Tech. injected a Dye during the CTA, & told me "drink lots of water, it'll flush out of your system in 8-12 hr.s". (WRONG). After-effects lasted 5 Full Days , the 1st 2 days I was 1/2 here & 1/2 spaced-out! the next 2 days I couldn't function out of bed for more than 90 min. - 2 hr.'s, then HAD to go back to bed. That CTA took 5 days to flush Out Of My System! Then there were Long-Range side effects that come & go in 6 week cycles. On a Mayo Clinic web site my side effects are documented, & although not common, Can Happen. Need I say I haven't been back to the Cardiac Surgeon? My daughter took me to a Cardiologist in St. Louis. He went thru my file, looked everything over, & told us 'In His Opinion Just As Is (sitting in his exam-room) from ALL the tests in my file, my chances of having a stroke are between .07% & .04%. If I choose to Have a Watchman Surgery it would lower my chances of a Stroke to .05% to .03%, so if I'd Like to have a Surgical Procedure (& the risks associated), I would gain .02%! Think about it & Let Me Know!' (we both thought about it for less than 2 minutes) & told him "If it lowers the risk a Whole .02%, think we'll Take A Pass." He invited us back in 1 year unless something happens before, but he said 99% of the Patients he sees would KILL for a diagnosis like he just gave me!" (Why Am I not surprised? I Felt like he'd taken a 2 Ton Weight off my mind!)

What a story!! I am so distrusting of cardiologists at this point. Your story gave me shivers.

Yes, the pain finally went away. I didn’t take them as long as you did, but it probably took a two months for the pain to go away. However, I did Repatha for four months and it took 8 months for that pain to go away.

It’s not instant. I still have some tolerable pain, but I’m willing to say it could be normal age pain at this point.

The drug induced pain was horrible and made me unable to do the things I love. I’m back. I will enjoy the rest of my life and I won’t return to the station/Repatha pain.

Thanks for confirming my issues. I am not a complainer and am usually quite tolerant, so it upsets me when I am not taken seriously. I hurt everyday, and I'm a very active 65 year old. I want to be able to play with my grandkids and dance without pain. I have a message in to my cardiologist so just waiting for his response. These pains are no joke. I've heard of the injectable. Sounds promising.

I’m 10 days off 80 mg starvation and still have weakness in right leg as well as aches and pains. Difficulty in walking. I’m an active 66 year old female and curse the day the Dr in hospital put me on this. Praying this goes away soon as I’m getting very depressed

Sorry for previous type o. I was on 80 mg atoravastatin
