Prostate Artery Embolization for BPH. Anyone have it done?

Posted by dmp08 @dmp08, Apr 16, 2023

PAE can be done through wrist or femoral artiry. Usually catheter is not needed. Catheter is for as a marker by some radialogists. I am wondering if it can be done without any sedation? Thanks.

Yes, had it done about 18mos ago. Did not work and had to take next step of Aquablation. The procedure is pretty non invasive and had high hopes but did not solve my prostate issues.

Day 26, quit taking the Alfuzosin (Alpha blocker) two days ago, still peeing. At this point, I consider the PAE a success, getting off the medication was my main goal. Any improvement from this point on is icing on the cake.

AllCON:
Age 66 and had I had artery embolization (AE) almost 2 years ago. Unfortunately it did not have the desired impact on urgency, flow, and trips to the bathroom. Therefore had an aqua oblation procedure done which is certainly more invasive and requires a catheter and longer recovery time. After some 6 months it appears to have solved my issues but sometimes do have pain urinating and pass small debris in the urine. The surgeon is not sure if this is calcified prostate material or perhaps bladder stones. I am exercising vigorously and my prostate seems to be under control.

Why did the Dr not check for bladder stones when he did your aqua? That is what my Dr did. Where did U have this done and by what Dr if I may ask? Thanks

I’m on Day 7 since my PAE and have noticed improvement already. Able to drink couple big cups of coffee in morning without running to restroom.

Looking forward to discontinuing finasteride and tamulosin on 8/10 — month after procedure — and seeing how things go.

Day 11 here, doing well. I was on dutasteride which lasts much longer (and is more powerful) in the body than finasteride, so even though I stopped taking it about 3 weeks before my PAE it will be some time before it is all out of my system. I really hate dutasteride, just horrible stuff. That being said, I have had Tulsa and now PAE, BPH can be hard to stop so we will see if I need it after this. But at least for now the PAE was super easy to tolerate, was hardly anything to worry about. But I had a real careful guy do mine. It will be a few months before the PAE's full effect is felt, but I agree already I am pretty good, so thankful for all progress. In the future if I need something PAE was so easy to handle with a real careful doc doing it anyway, I would do again if I had to.

Please keep us informed how it’s going. I may be a candidate for PAE and am interested in the procedure and getting off tamsulosin and finasteride.

You must be aware that according to a study done in Portugal, the success rate of a repeated PAE is 56,7%.

Well that is one article done where it was done. I'm not up to repeat yet, and they say it matters on the beads (some are better and some are not so good) and a lot else. So we will just have to see when time comes. Hopefully we are all in the group that needs no repeat, so those are the "success rate" in that article and that figure is more important.

Day 31 post PAE, day 7 post Alfuzosin. Doing better every day. Got up twice last night and didn't have to run to the Lowes bathroom when I went there yesterday. All of my LUTS issues are easing up. NO sexual side effects. One month phone checkup with my doctor tomorrow.

The first week was hell. The next 2 weeks were bad. I could happily live with where I'm at now, and my doctor says to expect full results after 3 months.
