C. difficile – Are your guts ever normal again?
Does anyone know any body that has recovered from c.diff (guts back to pre-c.diff status ) . I have been negative for a year and still have bloating every time I eat anything and sporadic diarrhea. I need maternity clothing to eat and be comfortable. I have 0 appetite since I was initially infected.I am on creon 36,000 . this helps some what with bloating,I take papya&pineapple enzymes not helping, and floraster 2xday not sure about that.I have tried the FODMAP diet, I avoid many foods on that diet. I am seeing an RD, just finished an elimination diet with her. If I eat I bloat there for I am. Bottom line...are my guts ruined forever ?

I live in Central FL and would like to contact USF Tampa for more info on study participation. I did a search and found a phone and fax number (no email). I will call today. Thanks for sharing and congratulations on finally getting rid of that horrible C Diff.

2 ReactionsI have been free of Cdiff symptoms for 2 weeks and only after symptoms i have is loss of appetite and more frequent trips to the bathroom but no diarrhea
Whatever i eat is what’s recommended so diet is covered
I know that with 25 to 30 percent of people who had CDiff can get it again but how long can i go without symptoms before i can relax and feel i will not get it again?
Loss of appetite is not a big issue

1 ReactionUmmm... I thinkg many different outcomes. I already had ibsD type issues after pelvic radiatoin years before then 2018 C.Diff and Vancomycin for months.... things gradually got worse even to fecal incontinence which I still have. So I don't want to frighten you, and am a Senior, and cannot really answer your question ... except to say after that I have not got "it" again.
What was rough on me was the fact that over those months taking Vancomycin I was told not to take Imodium to stop the diarrhea - so it was pretty horrible. My new GP had ordered another type of antibiotic but Pharmacy said didnt have so I went with the Vanco.. always wonder about that. The pharmacy later told me would have had it in 8 days wich i had waited as only for 2 weeks! Best of luck and try and be positive... wash hands especially before eating - especially in restaurants etc.
Okay Everyone...C Diff lives in our gut since it is one of many different bugs that are present there for any opportunity. It takes over in times when least expected like taking too much antibiotics or eating the wrong types of food. If you eat a diet of fermented foods without sugar, you eventually rid the gut of this bug but ONLY after about a year's worth of time. It doesn't happen in a month or two. I introduced my gut - microbiome to new ones through new foods like green juices, kombucha and water with citrus every day. No sodas of any kind, no pizzas of any kind, NO fast foods ever, limited sugar since this feeds the C-diff bug and cancer cells growth. Making gradual changes to your diet and lifestyle is the direction you want to take. Writing a diet diary helps you track this, having kitchen equipment that is easy to use everyday and talking with your doctor about this- all helps you make the gradual changes. If you enroll in the Gut/Brain study - they can also help monitor what is taking place in your gut over time. I have diabetes - so this adds to the challenges I face too along with migraines. The more co-morbidities - the more limitations one needs to consider - I am in my 70s and lean towards a Mediterranean diet that helps with weight, vital signs, and taste. It takes strength, fortitude, and willingness to stay the course because the outcome of daily wellness is what you are looking for. As new standards at the national level are being redefined for food, pharmacy, farming, and other dietary measures, we/I still need to know what I am putting into my mouth/body to stay well. And that means YOU TOO! Know yourself and what you are eating....
