Phlegm in my throat and post nasal drip after Covid

Posted by danny2022 @danny2022, Dec 18, 2022

Ever since I had covid in January of 2022 I recovered from the virus but I was left with a constant phlegm in the back of my throat and post nasal drip that will not go away. The feeling of having mucus in the back of my throat actually gets worse when I try to get rid of it by coughing. I have been given steroid inhalers, albuterol, allergy medication, but none of these work. The mucus gets worse especially after I eat. I've never felt like this before and it all started after covid. Can anybody relate to what I am going through?

How long has it taken to reach this level of recovery? Thank you!

I've had this for over 1 1/2 years. I've seen an allergist twice since February 2025. Her prescribed meds that helped: Trelegy & Xhance (a new form of fluticasone that delivers by blowing instead of inhaling). I also took & still use albuterol inhaler, mucinex, decongestant & antihistamine when needed. For the past few days all I've needed was albuterol. I hope this information helps you!!

I thought I was doing better with a Omeprazole and Claritin approach but proved wrong last couple days. Work related social events with presentations and group dinner created some underlying social stress which creates non stop sticky mucus that make it difficult to talk. Once home and able to decompress, phlegm still worse than baseline but gradually improving. Stress is a major trigger, even when I don't feel anxious, just background stress and needing to be on the ball, and this environment is just a nightmare for the amount of phlegm it triggers. There doesn't seem to be an answer however I'm going to try CBD during these events to see if it can reduce underlying stress and phlegm reaction. Other than the noise huffing and throat clearing we suffer in silence. This is such a horrible affliction 3.5 years and counting. I'm still fighting and hoping for some relief for myself and you all someday.

I agree that stress is a major factor in this! Have you heard of Xhance? A new type of fluticasone inhaler that delivers into the sinuses by blowing through the mouth. I know it sounds weird, but it really helped me! Trelegy also helped. Along with Albuterol, Mucinex, antihistamine & decongestant. In the past few days I have only needed my albuterol to clear the sticky throat phlegm. Great relief!! I also take cbd to relax & sleep. I hope this helps you. Xhance is expensive & requires a special pharmacy. I was lucky to get samples from my allergist. I hope to read great comments about your improvement too!

For me, I had a virus with the worst cough I've had in my lifetime. At times couldn't breathe & heart just pounded after each coughing spell. Cough & bringing up mucous never went away, just got a 'little' milder over time. Still have spells where it increases. Drs try but no cure to stop at present. Its my understanding that the virus threw immune system in respiratory tract out of whack.

Look into a new inhaler for sinuses called XHance. It really helped me! And Trelegy oral inhaler.

That’s my experience exactly. This has been ongoing since January 2023 for me after having Covid so it’s definitely related to that. Have seen multiple doctors, tried all the meds, had all the tests and scans … no one is able to help at all. It’s a condition that I have to live with and it’s so discouraging. I wake up very day hoping it will be gone and it’s always there.

I'm commenting on all these that I can to try XHance & Trelegy. Both have really helped me! Please read my other comments & my best to you!

Hi Danny, I have replied to many other comments here with this recommendation. Have you heard of XHance? It's a nasal inhaler of fluticasone that delivers by blowing through the mouth. Sounds weird, but it works!! I also used Trelegy, an oral inhaler. Both of these are expensive & XHance requires a special pharmacy. Please look into these. I swear it's what's finally got me through this!! Good luck & best of health to you!!

Stress is a killer for us! It flares up my symptoms like crazy. I keep a hot drink with me all of the time as sipping on it breaks up the mucus. People are just used to me and my stainless mug at every meeting and meal.

I am taking low dose naltrexone and it has minimized the mucus quite a bit. It is thought to modulate the immune system. I have had my skin clear up and my pain from the constant inflammation improve since I started it three months ago.

I feel compelled to post again about NAC (N-acetyl cysteine) as I sense that many here would find their symptoms dramatically relieved with it.

Cysteine is naturally produced in the body, and in turn precedes the production of glutathione which regulates many things including mucous production. N-acetyl cysteine is the only form that will absorb when you take it orally.

I now take two 600mg caps of NAC daily, one morning, one night since second bout of COVID - the idea being, after COVID disrupted everything to get glutathione production regulated. It's one of the two things that work. The other, 600 mg of mucinex every night to keep mucous thin and expressable. That's the maintenance dose - I up it to a 1,200 pill at night, and add lesser amounts (syrup, 200 mg pills) by day if needed.
