Pain in leg muscles, tendons, and knees after Bilateral PE on Eliquis

Posted by smasneri @smasneri, Jul 6, 2023

One month after massive bilateral PE and taking 5 mg twice daily. Experiencing constant and continual pain in legs, mainly behind both knees, in tendons, and some muscle flare ups. Have had two ultrasounds and a CT scan on both legs since I was diagnosed June 6 and they are negative. My D Diemer is .43 and all vitals strong and regular. Echocardiogram shows no strain on heart. We have ruled most everything else out. No trauma to legs, no cuts, bruises or strains. Is this related to the Eliquis? My local hematologist wants me on it for another 5 months, I won’t be able to make that unless this subsides. Anyone else out there having this issue? Recommendations?

I have been on elquis for almost 2yrs due PE. I am very active person. I use to participate in tri races and running events. Since I have been on this medicine I have had continued muscle weakness especially on the right side leg. Currently in Pt for torn mensicus. I have developed muscle spasms in my left foot to where my toes will stretch out as far as they cab before relaxing. Hurts something awful. My I teach swimming and having trouble keeping up with my clients. I keep asking the doc if I can reduce the med or something. I just have chronic muscle weakness in my right leg and my lower back hurts right around the si joint. Im so over it and the pain especially towards the end of day
I miss running. I can still bike and swim but those are getting harder to do. This muscle weakness is no joke when one spends their lifestyle trying to do right with their body.

Your comment are very interesting. Since starting Eliquis I have developed significant joint pain with the worst being hands/wrists and neck plus feeling ‘off’ in the mornings in particular. As the day goes on I get better but still have pain. The marker for inflammation also has gone way up along with my WBC. Haven’t yet spoken with PCP and cardiologist about it but will be soon. I dint feel like working out and I know I could not lift weights of any weight so getting weaker.

I’m feeling the same. Have a referral to a cardiologist and will update

I’ve been taking Eliquis since January and I noticed around a month later started having issues with my leg being stiff. my knees hurting when I bend them. It seems like it’s affecting my right leg worse I’m having issues trying to do anything around the house or in the yard now…I have to use a cane when I’m walking around the house and in the yard now. I’ve also started to get cramps in my ankle and foot at night…I’m wondering, after reading some Posts here if it could be the Eliquis.

On Eliquis 5mg twice a day and pain behind one knee is substantial. Hard to walk when arising from bed, couch, driver’s seat, and chairs even if leg had been elevated. Last ultrasound showed DVT has cleared. Don’t know why such pain—total disruption to daily life.

Thanks for the hug! I’m getting a third ultrasound to see what is happening with the DVT and to determine if it’s still present. Then my doctor and I can discuss further use of Eliquis.

It's a relief to learn there are many others having the same pain behind their right knee. Tendons and muscles to the point that it's very painful to walk on. I have been on Eliquis for 12 months, The pain in the back of my left leg just onset 2 months ago. I thought I may have injured it during physical activity. However, it will not get better, doesn't matter how I massage or pamper it. In the past Cardiologist don't like to take you off meds. Warfarin is the alternative requiring weekly blood test. Not a joy ride!
I'm not for one to go to the Doctors for every little ach and pain, nonetheless, taking meds is for lifetime. This pain is not going to stop unless I get off Eliquis! Got Afib from Covid Vaccine. Prior to vaccine, I was physically healthy and active. Now I am in pain without any movement. What else is there for remedy? Except quit taking it!

@tybehr

I’m addressing two of your comments.

One, about getting Afib after Covid vaccine.

I was diagnosed with Afib on. 4/01/23 with electrocardiagragm at Internist.
Saw cardiologist on 4/07/25.
He confirmed it and put me on Eliquis and blood pressure med.
His main focus was to have a sleep study set up and did not want to see me again even until that was done.

Got Moderna Covid vaccine on
4/11/23. Ended up in hospital on 04/16/23 with shortness of breath.
Had cardioversion done on 04/18/23 which did nothing for Afib.
Back in hospital one month later with Afib and 2nd cardioblationnwhich did nothing m.

So, I went from just having found out to have arrhythmia to being hospitalized 2 1/2 weeks later with an arrhythmia attack.
Cardiologist that I saw on 04/07/23 seemed not concerned about my Afib.
So, did the Moderna vaccine make the arrhythmia worse?

What was your timeline?

2) I lately have terrible back of knee pain at night only in both knees, ankle pain and foot pain.
lower hip pain. Hard to stand in one spot as knees give out.
Better in AM.
I was blaming this on taking Letrozole at night.
I started Letrozole on . 3/18/24.
Have had pain on and off with it since then.

Had never known about Eliquis knee pain.
Did not have knee pain like this til Letrozole.
Perhaps combination of Eliquis and Letrozole working together is causing these severe problems now.

What do you plans to do about your Eliquis pain?

I’m getting some type of laser test on my right leg to see there might be some type of blockage that’s causing the leg stiffness, my right foot has been retaining fluid even with being on Lasix….Had MRI done on my heart to see how strong my heart is now…might be the heart isn’t strong enough to be circulating blood to my right leg/foot. I don’t get any pain behind my knee as some of you have mentioned….my knee does hurt when bending while walking or climbing stairs…
Get discouraged from time to time…not fun getting old

If I were you I would replace Eliquis with Garligin, a natural supplement made with garlic and ginger, both known blood thinners. I had problems w/ Eliquis too, replaced w/ Garligin years ago, 1/5 of the price too. No side effects. Garligin made by Natural Slim.
