I, too, am one who cannot take antihistamines for sleep. I get hyped up instead of sleepy. The only thing I have found that helps me now that I had to taper off Klonopin is a CBD/THC gummy and it does not always help. Yet my neighbor finds good relief with Unisom and says the gummy does nothing. We are all different, yes!

How are you doing? I get to sleep, but wake up after a couple of hours. A very small dose of Klonopin helps me get 7-8 uninterrupted hours, but that’s not a good longterm solution, right? I need something to help me get my internal clock reset. THC not legal here or I would be doing that.

Hi Everyone,
It has now been three months since I had COVID. One of the most troubling symptoms is chronic insomnia. After a mild case of Covid that I thought was gone after seven days, on the eighth day I could not fall asleep without medication.
The way I describe the reason for my insomnia is as soon I am ready to fall asleep, my jaw drops back and airway opens I get an involuntary body shake with my lowers legs getting tingly and extremities, toes and ears feeling flush. This jerks my awake and it’s hard to get back to sleep. To sleep fitfully, I have used Ambien and Besroma, but I do not like their side effects and they aren’t very effective for long term sleep. Recently I use Benadryl or Unisom and I do get some sleep, but not consistent.
I do have a sleep apnea tests coming up this week. Perhaps that’s part of the puzzle. I have been following the medical protocol to get to the bottom of this. My primary doctor is very good but not a specialist in COVID. Next step perhaps a Neurologist?
In a nutshell, this is the one symptom, insomnia, that I would love to hear back from people on. What have you done to get on a path of recovery versus toughing it out and hoping it resolves itself with time? In addition are there any doctors and facilities that specialize in long haul Covid symptoms, specifically around sleep and the nervous system? Thank you!

Hi @jeffrey57. As a post covid going on 4th year insomnia survivor🙃 sounds like you are doing what you can and you’re here now. With your sleep study results, it will show the levels of apnea, types of apnea, times of apnea, and your bodies vital signs tied to that. With that and your other medical records, the interpreting physician can refer you to your healthcare systems available post covid clinic or request medical necessity out of network auth to one if they have none. Using a cpap/bipap not only helps sleep, it also provides healing oxygen while awake so patience in getting use to it with invaluable sleep therapist help . Persistence and kindly asking follow up is crucial since so many of us seeking these services🙃. Quickest healing to you🌈

Thank you for the note. I am anxiously awaiting a CPAP machine. I did the sleep study and I do have sleep apnea. Hopefully the equipment will be available soon. I really appreciate your note about persistency. I’m always working on being patient keeping in mind being a persistent advocate for myself. Getting the sleep test done and getting a CPAP are a good step in the right direction. I’ll keep you posted on my next steps and how it’s going with the CPAP once I receive it. Happy healing to you, as well.🙏

Major sleep issues since day 1.
fast forward 4yrs in now w/LC and it's worse. Today, I can't sleep more than 1 hour straight. I wake up every hour most times can't go back to sleep for while. I would give anything in the world to sleep 5 straight hours.
It's exhausting along with the 5 million other symptoms it's causing

I’m so sorry to hear that. Have you found any sleep aids to help you sleep? I am waiting patiently to get my CPAP machine which can only help. I do not think it is the end of my journey to figure out why I a cannot get to sleep without the hypnic jerk and tingling in the extremities. I know these symptoms sound strange. More to learn after I get the CPAP. Keep me posted on any possible treatments. Take care.

I find that sleep medication works for about a four- hour period of time. So I go to bed and hopefully I’ll fall asleep for an hour or two, then I take the meds. If I can get six hour of sleep, it is helpful. Some hanger but better than the fatigue that follows with no sleep.

Dr. Peter McCullough has some interesting info on his web site regarding COVID-shots. Long term effects, etc.

I haven't been able to get any since since having covid in 2022. It's 6am here in Sydney Australia and I've been trying to get to sleep since 2am..this has been the norm for me. I have brain fog all day and sever inflammation. I can't be productive and I suspect I have ocd / adhd as well. I would do anything to have a decent uninterrupted nights sleep and to be able to think & not have pain. If anyone can help, please let me know. I don't know how to see people's replies to this.. my first post.. or other people's posts.. so if you can contact me, I'd appreciate it, otherwise I'll try to figure it out.
Stay positive and hopefully their will be a breakthrough soon. Cheers, Tony

Hi @tonyboulad, welcome. You posted perfectly.

It is so hard (impossible?) to be productive without a good night's sleep. I'm sure while you're awake during the night, you're also concerned about the negative health factors of poor sleep. With long Covid, you want to maximize your healing. It's a vicious circle.
