Does anyone have a solution to help manage Reclast side effects?

Posted by dingus @dingus, Aug 15, 2024

Does anyone have a solution to combat Reclast side effects. I had the infusion a year and a half ago and the side effects started shortly after I had the infusion. I still have weak legs, swelling in feet, pain in bones, dizziness (serious dizziness), cold sweats, tired all the time and nervous twitching in bones. Any suggestions?

I experienced shoulder pain, left leg pain, left foot pain, nausea and the feeling of be exhausted all the time. I’ve been going to physical therapy and most symptoms have diminished to a degree after 9 months. I’ve spoken with the endocrinologist and he did not think it was from the Reclast; I do! Knowing that the symptoms from the Reclast, knowing that you have not done anything else to cause these symptoms. Try to exercise, stay active knowing that this will pass! Hopefully! I’m trying to look at it positively! Your mind is very powerful and if you can convince yourself that you are in control of these symptoms and try finding other things to do outside sitting and thinking about these symptoms, Hopefully, in time the symptoms will diminish; that’s my hopes anyways. I retired in August of 2023, in July 2024 had the infusion and the day after the infusion, have had symptoms ever since; although I can say they have lessened and hopefully continue to lessen. Worst part is, endocrinologist wants to do another infusion this coming June and I Honestly, do not know what to do! I’m 68 years old and do not want this to continue

@dingus pharmacists seem to know more about side effects than doctors, in my experience. I am not sure the doctors even google the online lists! Again in my experience I hear "I have never heard of that" or "Noone else has reported that to me."

If you talk to a pharmacist, that helps because you can then tell the doctor that the pharmacist said such and such rather than the typical "I read that" or "someone on a forum told me that" 🙂

My primary doctor prescribed Reclast. On the way home after the infusion, I developed a bad headache and nausea. For the next 45 days, I had Covidlike symptoms and couldn't clean my house. My primary doctor and an endocrinologist both insisted that I soon would feel better. They wouldn't prescribe anything as they said drugs might cause allergies that would complicate symptoms. I contacted the FDA and filled out a questionnaire. No reply was forthcoming. I journaled my symptoms and called my doctors. They both said, "You'll soon be better. You are not dying." Now I'm afraid to try another drug that my doctors have recommended.

cheryldance, what are they recommending. I don't think you'll try the second year of Reclast , but there is information that the bone-protective effects of Reclast lasts for two years. The doctor I like to quote on Reclasts says that he almost never prescribes the second year. He ran the clinical trials for Reclast.

I do not recall seeing anyone suggest CBD to counteract the long term problems with ReClast. I have no experience with it but it might offer some relief.

10 months out and I still have side effects from the Reclast and have declined any further treatment and they called me Friday and want me to go next Wednesday for a consultation! I’m still declining further infusion! This pain sucks

Hi,

I began treatment with Recast last summer. I just went for my followup bone scan. I can't interpret the report, and I am waiting for the doctor to return my call. Other than a bad few days, (perhaps a week) after the treatment, I don't know of any other side effects. Because I have terrible issues with my neck and back, I am scheduled for spine surgery(laminectomy) net month. I am trying to figure out what if any side effects I may have had but haven't attributed them to the Reclast. Can someone please explain what the continuing side effects have been?
Thanks so much!

Hi - I had Reclast over a year ago and have had pain and fatigue ever since, as well as occasional dizziness. My symptoms are being treated as fibromyalgia, as all neurological and rheumatologic tests came back negative. I’ve tried steroids and gabapentin for the pain and am now on Lyrica. Life as I knew it is over, unfortunately, as I’ve gone from being physically active and working to having to stop work and just managing pain and fatigue. I’ve done a round of TMS, which helped somewhat, and am about to try acupuncture.

It was recently suggested to me that everyone suffering from these medications long term to report that to FDA. I hope it is okay to share this information on here!
For on-line reporting to FDA: https://www.fda.gov/safety/medwatch-fda-safety-information-and-adverse-event-reporting-program
For phone reporting: 1-800-FDA-1088.

There is a lot of information online on Reclast side effects- drugs.com, the FDA and Pfizer's own drug insert: https://labeling.pfizer.com/ShowLabeling.aspx?format=PDF&id=4676
In addition to the brief info below, Pfizer has a thorough chart with every side effect and frequency reported. Not sure why doctors don't look at this.

I understand what you are going through. I also had awful side effects from Reclast and it’s been 4 months and I still have problems. I thought I was going to die. How dare they be so dismissive of your feelings.
I truly don’t think there is anything that can be done unfortunately. I’m constantly lightheaded and have heart rate issues. It awful. I tried to file a complaint with the FDA and couldn’t find a send button
Stay strong. I know how awful it is
