Metoprolol Withdrawl
I started on Metoprolol Suc 25mg back in 2018 due to increased heart rate and BP...Heart rate sometimes topping 180 per minute. A few times my BP was higher than could be measured...then 2019 comes along and I found out I had an egg allergy. I didn't correlate the two as being the same issue and eventually, in 2021 my Metoprolol Suc was increased to 50mg.
After I really started watching my egg intake...that is very hard as just about everything has some sort of egg in it and my allergy was whites and yolks. My pulse would drop down into the 40's at night and I could go exercise and barely hit 70.
Talked to my doctor and asked if the egg allergy and BP issues could be related and was told no, that I needed to stop drinking any form of caffeine. Continued have issues with low pulse and lightheadedness. Was referred to a cardiologist and after giving my background was told to tapper from 50 mg to 25 mg for 4 days. I was nervous so I went a step further and split the 25 mg in half and took 12.5 for 4 days.
The first week was fine with a few episodes of High BP and Pulse but they told me to expect fluctuations for a week or two. So now starting on Day 5, I have been waking up with headaches...which if I take 2 migraine tabs it goes away but it happening for the 4th day now. Has anyone else had any headache issues coming off Metoprolol and how long did it last.

Hello, I wanted to check in and see how you are doing now with the withdrawal symptoms you had after stopping metoprolol. My husband was told by his dr. to just stop taking his 12.5 mg dose daily (1/2 of a 25 mg tablet) that he was taking for 2.5 years. The first month he felt nothing but then now over the last few days he's been having heart palpitations daily. He said they only last a couple of seconds but that it happens several times a day. He said it feels like a flutter and then a quick surge of adrenaline similar to how you feel when you are on a roller coaster or come over a hill and down it driving fast in a car. Currently his cardiologist has him on a two week zio heart monitor. I can't understand why his cardiologist didn't ween him off metoprolol slowly. I wondered if you still have symptoms or did you get better over time? How long does withdrawal period last? If it ever goes away or do you have to get back on the drug to keep it away now? Thanks for your response. Wishing you good health.
Thank you. I have new been off the toporol since October. I had a bad reaction to some eggs over Christmas and I didn't go back on them i just dealt with the symptoms of the egg allergy for a few weeks but my pulse is now staying normal with no headaches as long as I make sure I am not eating egg.
This is my 2nd weeks off of metoprolol, I’m having quite a few symptoms. I’m not sure how long this will last. I’m taking supplements that like hawthorn, and red yeast rice.
Things have changed. No Bisoprolol in January.
Interestingly on 2.5mg Bisoprolol and Diliazem my BNP was 198 heading for Heart Failure. Last September. I halved it down to 1.25mg a early December brought my BNP down to 103! Then now having stopped it my BNP is 89.
BNP is the protein peptide manufactured by the heart when it is stressed. As I say ‘heading for heart block’.
Glad to get rid of beta blockers! They are now my do not prescribe!
Cheers JOY
What symptoms?
A gradual withdrawal should have been done or an immediate change to another med whether BB or CCB.

I have AFIB. I tried tapering before an ablation and it wouldn't work. Big spikes AND AFIBBING. 50 mg per day. Now, six months after an ablation, with a perfectly controlled heart rate, I'm in my third week of tapering. at 12.5 per day this Friday. I plan on tapering till end of month. NO spikes but I've read you can get rebounding weeks later. He should get the Apple watch which will track his heart 24/7 so he can see the heart rate. Sometimes the flutter isn't a concern if the priorty is getting off the BB and there's no spike. People live with flutters all the time rather than take the poison meds like I took - Amiodarone which is also magic! I'm sure it takes time for the heart to learn to be normal again. The watch is a lifeline for me and alerted me to AFIB I didn't even know what that was. Also my rate was super low overnight and gradually creeping up I can see it every morning.
A year ago I ended up with a few episode of afib, my dr put me on metoprolol, which has caused muscle aches, joint pain and fatigue. My dr said to take a regular dose then 1/2 pill the next night. I did this and have had irregular heart rates. I’m not sure what’s normal, on line it says 60-100 for resting, when walking around my heart rate can get up to 124-134,
Just wondering if other have experienced this and how long will it last to level off.
Amu45sin here.
Please work with your doctor. Heart rate of 124-134 is not normal when walking around.
We have to advocate for ourselves, and push the doctors to help us!!
Hi
Yes OK to have H/R rise when you exert yourself. Don't even try to get a reading.
The main thing is control at rest (20mins quiet, no talking, no moving).
On Bisoprolol 156 and Metorolol 186. Day and Heart monitored.
Diltiazem 60s on 120CD mg and Bisoprolol 2.5
Just Diltiazem 80.
On Metoprolol get a blood test on level Pro-BNP.
