I am 81(m). I go to the gym every day, 60 minutes of a variety of treadmill/rowing/elliptical, weights, resistance, weight lifting, etc. I do isometrics/yoga at home. Resting heart rate is 45. BP is 140/65. SO2 is 95. BMI is 28 (there is some muscle mass included). I am diagnosed with aortic regurgitation (mild to severe) and aortic aneurysm (4.7) and the surgeon's specialty is open heart which seems antiquated. I am getting a second/third opinion for limited intrusive right anterior thoracotomy (RAT) which is less aggressive and leaves my chest structure intact. Does someone have experience with the RAT or other, but similar, procedure. I would rather not go the TAVER, TAVR, EVAR, etc. route at this time as it seems to almost force an open heart procedure if needed at 95. Thank you for your comments.

Morning!

Am almost 81 and live a quality and independent lifestyle with a 5.9mm AAA. My body tends to misbehave more as aging takes it’s toll due to several autoimmune issues and low body immunity. However two surgeries, one extensive, have been recommended by Mayo vascular surgeons as my aorta is curved due to scoliosis and too close to a kidney for EVAR.

Am still undecided about surgery. The final decision is a personal choice and may differ with someone facing the same situation. I’m hesitating because my body is exhausted and know in my heart it could take years to get back to a quality lifestyle postop, if at all. In addition, there is limited female “outcome” research for the 5% of women with pre/post op aneurysms (Per a female Mayo vascular surgeon), There is also the possibility surgery could create new unforeseen health issues.

Very little research, or support, is focused on women with aneurysms. We are basically, “on our own”. However, it is a blessing to finally connect on Mayo’s website, as one does not feel quite as alone in a frightening situation.

It might be a thought to find a reputable surgeon and scheduled a consult. Get a second opinion, if needed.

Your choice - your voice

Blessings!

63 y/o male here. I feel you. I've had PAD since 2017. Two stents , one in each illeac 2017 and 19. The second is a kissing stent with the end of my aorta in 2020 diagnosed with a 4.8 aaa. Now reduced to a 4.1. However, the doc vascular who did my surgeries has been monitoring this and my renal artery which suffer from 60 to 90 percent blockages bilaterally will be stenting them this coming Wed. He noticed it in the aaa ct scan in 2020. Says it's now time due to sudden increasing in my BP went from 10 mg lisinopril to 30 mg daily along with metiprolol and clopidogrol... very anxious for the evar procedure. Concerned of the nearness to my aaa. Doc said thabk God you have two renal arteries on each side. Asking for praywrs Wed. Been a mild to moderate smoker for 35 years! Down to half a pack a day... All is on God's hands

I'd like to see some more discussion of surgery for octogenarians. I can't believe I'm about to become one. I don't feel old yet.

I have smoke for over 36 years and was a one pack a day smoker sometimes going over a couple. I have successfully been able to only do a half for over a week now once I heard my aaa was still ok and mismeasured yet revealing my evar Wednesday for my kidneys... God is giving me more than enough notice and chances!
