Anxiety when waiting for your first calcium score test

Posted by cmcclelland @cmcclelland, Apr 1 9:59am

I am posting because I am new to this group and about to have my first calcium score test. I am TERRIFIED even without having had the test so was glad to find this support group. I have a family history of heart disease and stroke (father), have HPB (take meds) and low tolerance for exercise. Otherwise, healthy 61 year old. Will follow up with results but just wanted to introduce myself. I am thankful to have found the group!

Don't worry about it. My score is 205 and I'm on a statin. I'm 66. I still go jogging 3x a week. Your arteries don't have to be perfect to work, but you do need to know what is going on to keep it that way.

I’m 69 with an awful family history, a cardigan calcium score in the 75% percentile, and I’ve not had the cardiac events that both my parents had (starting at age 34), or my brother.

I have an “unamerican diet” according to my MD (no red meat, lots of fruits and vegetables, nuts, etc), take meds, and exercise.

Lifestyle trumps genes

I'm new to the group too. I had a calcium score test about 8 years ago and then I had one about 4 years ago one about 2 years ago.
My mom had a stent put in her LAD artery when she was 70 I just turned 65 and I have some plaque in that artery and I am terrified
My cholesterol is completely under control with statins and a low dose my triglycerides are great.
The doctor said if I want peace of mind because I'm always terrified I'm going to have a heart attack he said to get this test done the CAT scan of the arteries to see if there is blockage. I have no symptoms but I just thought it was odd that he said from my peace of mind. And what people are telling me if he's that concerned he would say you need to get it done

That is weird. I would be so uncomfortabke if a doctor said that to me. I am working alongside a functional medical clinic (who routinely take labs that are more informative than the ones my family practitioner would order) to get a better picture of what is going on. I was curious about whether or not I might be insulin resistant and they looked at all those markers and told me that cholesterol levels are a problem when there is metabolic dysfunction. My glucose and insulin levels and my A1c were all normal. In any case, I need to stop blaming covid and get back to weight lifting and exercise. I suppose I will have my calcium results some time this week.

The fear and stress from worrying about it constantly can actually release chemicals into your body which are not good for your heart! It would be very important for me to get that skin done… I have already done, so… To know exactly what I’m dealing with. Thinking of you.

It's the stress that scares me.
I just left a full blown narcissistic verbally mentally and emotionally abusive husband and I'm trying to heal and it's just emotionally mentally and physically exhausting on me 😥

The anxiety could be worse than any issues you may find. It is understandable. However, we can and should still address our anxiety head on. In my case, I think it boils down to feeling a loss of control. In reality, it was imaginary control in the first place. Realizing that helps. The fact is, having this test will give you the data you need to make any course corrections that are needed. It is not a sentence. It is a guide. When I found out how high my CAC is (1,208 at age 57 and otherwise healthy) it was a blow at first. Then I worked on letting go of the anxiety as it hurts more than harms, and and acknowledged that the health choices (mental and emotional and physical) and decisions I make now and going forward are going to determine the quality of the rest of my life. How we got to here does not matter. What matters is what we do now and what we do next. When I learned I have no blockages, just a lot of calcified plaque because the statins-are-doing-their-job, it was a relief and a wake up call. We work with what we get. I've added daily lap swims and cut out red meat and most dairy and I feel great. We learn what we can, adjust to it, and find our peace.

Truth. My score was 65 and the doctor put me on a statin. I am not excited about this but certainly want to make changes now rather than waiting and letting things get worse. We are preparing for an upcoming move in just over a week so things have been crazy busy......just trying to stay sane!

I am 68 and just had a score of 1087. I am very active physically and all relevant numbers are great as far as cholesterol, etc. I am on a 40mg statin. Meeting a cardiologist in couple week s to talk about a CT angiogram to see if any blockage. No symptoms so the usual response from Dr. is until symptoms, no worries. With that score I do have some anxiety but am overcoming it by concentrating on living a good life.
