Hello, everyone,
I had my zoom follow up appointment couple of days ago with one of Mayo clinic providers, my first time to meet with him. He looked at the blood tests and my case, he focused on the bone density scans and prescribed a tablet medication and calcium supplement. My bone density scan showed drop in density. He talked about the side effects of the Med and said that bone density will get worse due to anti-rejection Meds of the kidney transplant. Also, the strict way to take the new prescribed medication and the horrible side effects while my new kidney is only 7 weeks old in my body, made me decide not to take the medication and look for alternatives. I don't see myself jeopardizing the new kidney or expose myself to those horrible side effects.
Originally my kidney failed due to a strong medication I took in the past and I have phobia that this can happen again to my new kidney. I have been searching online for alternatives, clearly diet, exercise, weight bearing, and some talked about the vibration platforms that stimulate bone and muscles cells to grow. I hope that this group can share their experience on bone density with me. Thanks very much.

I encourage you to ask questions of your transplant team. I understand not wanting to risk any damage to your new kidney. You want to honor the gift of life. At the same time, be sure to work with your transplant team and endocrinologist to ensure adequate bone health. Lifestyle approaches help, but in some cases may not be enough. I would ask questions like:
- Can I maintain my healthy bones through lifestyle alone? Like diet, exercise, supplements? What would work in MY case?
- How with my bone density be monitored to know if things are working or not?
- When might it be necessary to take medications?
- There are many medication options. Which are best for my kidney and my bones?
