Hormone Replacement starting at 75yrs old

Posted by curlyqlinda1 @curlyqlinda1, Jan 23, 2024

Doing reach, I have decided to try HRT with testosterone, very low dose. I’m in pretty good health, but was diagnosed with Polymyalgia Rhuematica 2yrs ago. I’m Just trying to make a better life with what yrs I have left. There are so many positive messages out there, and yes I’m on the older side. I have 6 daughters and we have all been doing a lot of reading on this subject. Is there anyone else trying HRT at an older age?

Yes, I would like to see this conversation continued as I also posted a question recently asking if anyone started HRT after the age of 70. I have always been super sensitive to drug side effects and I find I am even more so at the age of 71. I have tried bio-identical hormones twice for a short period and got such bad side effects of bloating, cramping, breast tenderness etc that I gave up but I am thinking that I probably did not give my body enough time to adjust. I have all the post menopausal symptoms of vaginal dryness and atrophy, insomnia, mood swings, dry skin, etc and am going to make an appointment with an endocrinologist to discuss options.

@1oldsoul that is so funny to me. I was taken off Premarin at age 74 ( now 75). I was taken off due to the risk of stroke as I had two TIA’s ( transient ischemic attacks). I was on Premarin for twenty years or more. And here is what I will tell you: I MISS IT!! My infectious disease doctor ( I have a serious lung disease) told me that research has not found a correlation between stroke and Premarin. And I was on a very low dose. She suggested I ask my ob/gyn if I could go back on it every other day. If I could I would take Premarin every day of my life. It solves a multitude of issues. Good luck. Irene5

Hi @gravity3. This is out of my area of experience. If you’re interested in doing more research on the subject, you might try https://scholar.google.com/

Are you on a HRT?

Hi @gravity3 You had replied to me in a previous comment: “ I noticed that the study seems to refer only to orally administered estrogen. What about transdermal or pellet estradiol?”

That’s when I answered, “This is out of my area of experience. If you’re interested in doing more research on the subject, you might try https://scholar.google.com/“.

So while I appreciate your offer of help, I guess I don’t know what you mean. I’m not the one who asked the question. You asked me! 😀

Thanks for the tip--I just downloaded it. The title sounds like it discusses exactly the info I am interested in, "Do Boomers Have a Choice? Rethinking Timing of Hormones."

I just listened to this podcast, fantastic information!
Makes me kind of angry that us baby boomers got the very short end of it all.

I started taking a pink suppository pill called Imeexxy 10mcg for estrogen . I was taking the estrogen cream but it was burning and itching so she changed it to the suppository . I am 77 years old and my gyno has suggested taking it as i get steroid shots for my back and that causes vaginal bleeding like a period for a week .
I was wondering if anyone has had negative side affects like hair loss or weight gain from taking estrogen creams or vaginal suppositories ? Also if you decide to go off of it what happens .?

Estradiol cream helped me immensely, but the secret to using it successfully was not to follow the regular dose amount because that did cause burning. When I used a much smaller amount (a pearl size dollop) as recommended by my urologist every other day, it solved my problems. Now I just us it as needed.

What are your issues ? Iam only taking it because i am trying to stop bleeding after a steroid shot .. i would not like to take it at all but my gynecologist said she would like to see the uterus lining to be at 4 centimeters and mine was at 6 ,what ever that means ? She wants me to take the pearl estrogen for two weeks straight then down to to 1 pellet twice a week . It still burns and itches so it would nice not to take it at all .. thanks for your reply any info does help . 😊

Hello @vivi75
A few weeks ago you mentioned you had an appointment with a physician that specializes in hormones and menopause, how did that appointment go? Were you pleased with the outcome?

My appointment was Friday and I am very pleased! He prescribed Intrarosa 6.5 mg vaginal insert and it arrived yesterday, so you know I started on it last night! He also prescribed an Estrogen vaginal patch but my Rx program is mail order and it won't arrive until the middle of the week. I was very impressed with him. He's been a GYN/OB for 40 years and no longer delivers and instead has switched his interest to Menopausal Women and our needs. He attends conferences, is a member of numerous organizations regarding women, menopause and aging and seems very knowledgeable and understanding. I feel he's the answer to my prayers.

Well this sounds very promising.
So glad you were able to find a doctor that heard you and would help.
After finding a new gynecologist myself , who’s been focusing on menopausal symptoms and hormones, I’ve started on an estradiol patch, micronized progesterone and vagifem, an estrogen vaginal insert. It’s been about 6 weeks- a couple weeks ago I started to experience breast tenderness and some vaginal discharge. In the past few days I’ve noticed some heart palpitations. I’m hoping that as my body gets used to the hormones these side affects will diminish.
Let me know if you experience anything similar.
Best of luck!
