What is the correct cm in thoracic aorta ansersym to have surgery
Hello I'm 55 was diagnosed with a thoracic aorta ansersym 3years ago. I don't know how I got it. I don't smoke. When going to a cardiologist at a good hospital he said 6cm was surgery and I am 5.5cms . I have read several websites on surgery they say the cms I am now I should have had surgery . But the Dr says don't worry come back in another 2years. Well I decided to find another opinion. What do you think I'm lost on this I don't have any family left to help me with decisions.

Thank you so much! Very informative....I did my usual Wed morning workout at the gym with a better frame of mind.
Stay well!
The latest consensus opinion on thoracic aortic aneurysms lowered the bar for surgery to 5 cm. In the past it was 5.5 cm.
You need an uptodate cardiologist. This one is out of date.
Can you get to an academic center that has expertise in this condition?
Also google 2022 consensus guidelines on thoracic aortic aneurysms.
Thank you for the update. I live in Oklahoma. There is cardiologist here not professional.
Hello well I finally get my second opinion Dr. Next Tuesday I'll see what he says wish me luck. Also the ones w ata are u always out of breath
See a cardiologist to begin with, then get him/her to refer you to an aortic specialist, one with lots of experience and success. Get as much information as you can so that you feel confident that you know the score. If you're still confused, you haven't looked hard enough. Good luck and stay well.
Find a university hospital. They will have the best cardiologist and Thoracic Surgeons. Yes 5cm seems to be top end for arorta Best
Cleveland Clinic and Mayo Clinic aren't University Hospitals, but they are 2 of the best. Sometimes University Hospitals are o.k. but it doesn't make them magical in this area. The key is to find a center that specializes in Cardiovascular issues and aortic roots, heart transplants etc. In other words, a center that has done hundreds and thousands of these and not just 2 or 3.
Hello Steffe your cardiologist is absolutely right. Please search for latest studies which all show that risk till 6 cm for young individuals is absolutely negligible. Can you please let me know who is your cardiologist
Hello, where have you seen this newer consensus for surgery at 5.0cm? I have one Dr. telling me he would not recommend surgery until 5.5cm and another Dr. telling me it’s go time. I am at 5.0cm and my AAA grew 0.4cm the past year. The second Dr. has said the consensus is more nuanced today and he did refer to a study he was a part of that was published in October last year. Thanks
