As I understand it a dilation of the aortic root is an aneurysm located at the very base where the aorta meets the heart, the valve is right there and a dilation of the aorta can prevent the valve from closing completely creating regurgitation, if the valve is healthy a repair may only involve replacing that section of the aorta but leaving the valve in place
