Started Repatha - Side Effects

Posted by HomeAgainLA @llynch17056, Mar 21, 2024

I had terrible side effects with statins (any statin, any dosage). For about 30 years my doctors have pushed statins and
I have resisted. Finally I agreed to Repatha. The first week I had zero side effects. With my second dose, 2 weeks in, i woke up and my joints and muscles hurt a LOT.
1. Does this side effect go away?
2. What do you know about the recent information that the Repatha trials underreporting deaths from cardiac events while taking Repatha.

I really like my cardiologist, but I can tell it’s all about the numbers. I suffered side effects of statins for 2 years, while he minimized it. I had to tell him I was stopping either with or without his permission. He said ok. Pain and weakness went away but numbers back up. I had 4 months of feeling good again and he asked me to try Zetia. Within a week the pain started again. Now he’s called in Repatha. I have not started it.

Same experiences. Read comments on Repatha. For me and others the side effects come on slower than with statins, but when they come, wow! I quit Repatha once then tried it again then quit it for good. Recovery from Repatha takes about 3 months.

Repatha is a biologic drug, meaning it has organic matter in it. It can interact with your immune system and cause infections. I now have an upper respiratory infection. A friend suggested that I take an OTC liver detox to get rid of the toxins in my body from the Repatha. I just ordered one on Amazon.
Let me be clear on something. If anyone has had difficulty with statins or has had side effects from other drugs, that person will eventually reject Repatha and feel miserable. I didn’t know that it was a biologic until today. That is very troublesome. The drug maker seems to try to keep that under wraps. These drugs are miracle drugs until they aren’t. The drug makers come like carpetbaggers hoping that they can reap their billions before the walls cave in.

Wow, I have seen posts from people that have been on this medication for many years and not one of them mentioned that they will have to get off of it due to toxicity! Please put a link to the study that is peer reviewed about this medication being toxic! I am taking it, and I am very happy with that and have not had any infections from taking it, and my immune system targeting bacteria and viruses is horrible! If anyone was going to get infections from taking it, it would be me. I am concerned that people will stop using it because of your post.

Wow. Very interesting and good to know. My heart doctor doesn’t care about anything except low numbers. He was giddy when my numbers fell with Repatha. Ugh. There is so much more to all this than numbers.

The person that posted getting side effects the same as statins from this medication is just talking… There is no scientific study that says a persons body will reject the medication. The person is also blaming the drug for an upper respiratory infection, and has no proof the drug is what is causing it. Only go with the scientific studies that you can review and not what somebody says as being truth! There is so much subjective, miss information that people post so beware! I have known people on the medication for years and that has not happened to them. But again that is hearsay from me again read scientific studies.

If I am having muscle aches, joint aches, headaches, loss of muscle mass, sore throat, runny nose, congestion from this medication, it is toxic to me since I am not feeling/functioning as a normal human being. That is why I will be taking the detox.
There are those of us with extreme sensitivity to medications. I’m just saying that if you are one of these people and you have had problems with statins watch out. It is likely that you may also end up with problems on this medication.

I am very sensitive to medication’s to which is why I could not take statins or osteoporosis meds. I had some of the side effects the first couple months but now they have completely resolved. I think a persons body needs to adjust to them hang in there for me it is better than having a heart attack unexpectedly.

My body never adjusted. I felt SO bad that I’d rather live less years and feel good the years that I do live.

Yes to extreme side effects with statins AND, yes to extreme side effects with Repatha. The side effects took a little longer on Repatha which tricked me into thinking I could tolerate it. But when the side effects happened, boy they came on strong.

One of the published side effects of Repatha is flu symptoms. Also, joint and muscle pain and back pain. I had back pain so bad that taking a steep hurt my back. I’ve done yoga for over 10 years and my muscles couldn’t hold poses and my joints hurt so much i couldn’t do anything I had been doing. I am off of it for a couple of months and my body is coming back. I can do yoga again and can walk 10,000 steps a day again. Not everyone has side effects. I believe those that tell me they do.

I am going now to pick up my Repatha - $500.00 for one month because of the Tier class of the drug making me meet a deductible ( medicare Part D with Humana) - I talked to my pharmacist who said many of his clients tolerate this well, much better than statins. Next month, and onward, will be $125.00. Most of my prescriptions are 10.00 or less so this is sticker shock. I also have a sinus infection and have been really achy and I'm not on anything for cholesterol, so I will not start this drug until I am fully well. If I were on it, I would blame it for my lingering month of sinus issues. I appreciate this forum and people in the trenches talking, not doctors and pharmacists. Still, it is hard to tease out what causes what, especially as we age. I can attest to 4 months of bliss with pain and weakness remitting when I stopped atorvastatin. I only gave Zetia a week because I got aches again, but was it the sinus infection? I don't know.
