Hi, everyone. I am a male at the age of 71, had burning tongue for 2 and half years starting with a metal taste in mouth, It has been horrible to go through not knowing how it started and if my tongue will ever heal. During those years I lost taste. Now I can taste a little. I went everywhere to find a cure or something that will quiet the nerves. This has created a social isolation problem because going out means you are always around food so I don't eat outside anymore. Depression has set in during any celebration. I am on a very bland diet, drinking water, meditating, and making sure I don't eat tomato sauces, citrus, and many other restaurant foods. I am now looking into acupuncture and waiting for someone to find a cure for this ailment. Some doctors think it was a variant of Covid that started this because other than this I am very healthy. I have been diagnosed with dyseugia.

I was lucky to have a daughter who is a nurse. She gave me a solution that numbs the tongue for about 30 minutes. It is Lidocaine. It is like a gell that coats your tongue when it is stinging, The stinging or burning has changed my life. I can see why people that have this become socially isolated, then become depresssed, and then they need cognitive therapy. Every time you go somewhere there is always food and drink. I find that this sometimes sets off the burning. I can only hope that they come up with a cure in 2025. I have gone everywhere and the doctors just don't know how to treat this. Hope this helps.

I’ve had BMS for over 17 years. Over time it has lessened because I’ve learned to deal with it. But there are days when it’s so bad that I feel like hitting my head against the wall. There are a couple of good groups on Facebook that give a lot of help and suggestions.

I am at 2 and half years going on 3 and I know exactly what you mean. Where are these groups on Facebook. I am also learning how to deal with it. Do you know how you got this? Are you taking anything that helps you with the burn?

I suffered from burning tongue, and not one doctor took me seriously. Did some research and learned that the blasted medication prescribed by the then-neurologist was behind my suffering. Burning tongue and totally dry mouth. Was so difficult to deal with since I was a language teacher in a high school setting, teaching 6 classes per day. Had to have bottled water placed in various areas of my classroom (I did not stand still while I taught, since I enjoyed interacting with the students). Became intensely bad until I insisted that I would no longer take certain medications, went to another neurologist who crated a tapering schedule for me. Still had periodic episodes of burning tongue but so much milder. Hurt nonetheless. Chips of ice was/is so soothing. Used to chew gum but that created issues with my partial so used non-methylated cough drops/lozenges instead. Over time, the condition ameliorated, and presently I experience it mostly when not sufficiently hydrated. I also learned within the past few months that there is a connection with burning mouth syndrome and a lack of certain essential vitamins, I believe it's the B family. I've been on B12 injections monthly (prescribed by a neurologist who was consulted due to my having so many neurological problems), for nearly 9 yrs now. I gather that those injections contributed to my having obtained relief from my painful symptoms.

I was 3.5 years into burning trying many different medications. After obtaining a scope of my esophagus I have reflux and Barrett’s. I have to treat long term but 60 days of Prilosec 40 mg twice daily and sucralfate 10 ml before meals and at bedtime has pretty much eliminated the burning. When slight burning comes thru I chew 1 pepsid complete. Of course I have followed all recommendations for lifestyle changes, eating, drinking, etc. and raise head of your bed 6 to 8 inches and eat small meals and don’t eat late in day. Your doctor can try these medications on you before a scope. It takes patience and a good 30 days to start to see results. I drink lots of warm water to wash away acid. I also take 5 mg baclofen at night to help with reflux. Good luck. I tried allergy tested, replacing crowns, root canal and finally even pulling a tooth and stopping all medications to see if medications were making the burning worse. When I do get a little bit of burning during day, if I do get burning, I chew 1 pepsid complete. Of course no big meals, don’t eat late at night, no drinking, no smoking, no spicy foods,…read up on what to do to help reflux. My reflux was silent as I never knew I had reflux.

I am being treated for GERD with 3 different medications. I also have BMS and since my GERD symptoms have not improved, I am wondering if in fact my symptoms are all related to BMS. Does anyone else have burning of the tongue, roof of mouth, extended to the throat and sternum region?
