Would like to know people's experience using Fosamax

I was so sick after one fosamax, I was on the toilet and projectile vomiting. I was freezing then sweating while vomiting. I called Dr after hours nurse, all she said was call an ambulance or go to hospital. After 12 hours it was finally out of my system. Will not take again.

I have been on alendronate over 2 years when my prescription plan changed and so did the formulation for my drug. That's when my diarrhea started. The drug company used a non active ingredient (mannitol) that I suspected caused my diarrhea. They were able to switch me back to my original manufactured formula and I'm back to normal. I have been happy with Fosamax otherwise.

My mother was diagnosed with osteoporosis at the age of 70 and live to be 84 but did die with broken bones. She refused the Forteo and all that they had offered after researching and hearing over and over that it was no good. Just my mothers experience.

I had a bad reaction to Fosamax. It has many side affects. No 2 people R the same & for a Dr. to state "everyone takes it that has osteoporosis without a reaction" is misleading. I M medication sensitive. My bad reaction was bone locking. Woke up at 4 AM to take my pet out for a walk & could not move. It took over 4 hours for me to be able to unlock my legs & 1 arm. I had a bad reaction to Os-Cal in the 1960's causing pain in my bones. When I stopped taking both of these Meds/Supplements, the symptoms ceased. My PTH (parathyroid) tests fluctuate. I don't see any conversation regarding this test & its importance. Now I am being bullied into taking the Prolia shot by physicians! How much of a kickback do they get for promoting these drugs? I was just told by my primary care physician (PCP) that it will make no difference to be seen by an endocrinologist as she will send me to the Grand Poo-bah expert of Osteoporosis study at the U/R for the Prolia shot. No one is interested in checking me 2 C if I hv a problem w/the parathyroid test. I M 80 yrs of age. I spent my entire career in a swivel chair w/3 phones & 2 bookshelves of heavy manuals I wrote to help me diagnose software & hardware issues. I was constantly rotating at the waist. Now I have problems with my knees, especially the left one & that is where the "osteoporosis" was found. It's a no brainer. I've had this problem for 8 years & this could be the reason why the femur shows bone loss. What is the matter with these doctors. I'm doing their homework & they are blowing me off. "Be your own medical advocate" - Right! & Be ignored. Input anyone? Am I celiac sensitive? Dr. response: "You don't exhibit any signs of it." How would they know? It's a blood test - very simple blood test. The parathyroid test is a scan. I'm moving on from my current PCP to an Internist.

This exactly mirrors my experience with Fosamax. I fractured my T8 vertebrae just after the fifth year I was on it.

I had improvement in my T-scores after the first two years but they worsened after that.

I had no idea when I started on it that all bone remodeling would be suppressed, not just bone resorption. I was clueless and just went along with what my doctor told me.

In retrospect, I would not have stayed on it as long as I did.

I did five months of Tymlos before Cigna cut me off. I have a Rx for teriparatide (Forteo generic version) that I’ve been trying to get Accredo to fill for two months now. It’s been nothing but a runaround.

Bone formation from taking anabolics like Tymlos and Forteo is attenuated after anti-resorptives like Fosamax. I dislike having to wait for two years to see if it makes any difference. I had some side effects while on Tymlos that were unpleasant. Since I haven’t started the Forteo I am unsure if it will be the same.

I have learned so much since my fracture a year ago. I’m glad that people who are new to osteoporosis have resources like this forum to learn more particularly about the medications they are prescribed.

I began taking Fosamax in October this year, and a couple weeks ago, started experiencing scratched/inflamed gums. This has never happened in the past and at first, I didn't realize this was a side effect of the medication, but the inflammation has persisted. So, I'm going to stop taking Fosamax for a few weeks and see if my gums return to normal.

I have had two shots of Prolia since being diagnosed with osteoporosis. My PCP wanted me to go on Fosamax but I refused because I have GERD. I'm worried about long term effects of the Prolia. Can you just go off it without going on something else? I wish I never started it. TY
