Inconsiderate, intimidating neighbors cause depression and anxiety?

Lets; say you have neighbors that sit outside your apartment building, smoke "weed" in public view (which is illegal) and use intimidating gestures towards you as you come and go. Could this be enough to cause legitimate depression and anxiety?

@rashida, I greatly appreciate your reply. Those ideas were the first things that I considered. I almost asked someone if they could pick me up and bring me back to the apartment and before I could they asked me! I politely declined as I am only leaving and coming back in daylight and at least I feel safer. Not that this matters at all to the people hanging out. The things that I have seen taking place outside the building are crazy, like I literally could not believe my eyes there for a moment.

My mistake was waiting too long to do anything effective. There are now a number of other people, both at the complex and outside, who know exactly what is going on. There is also official corroboration with some of the things I have observed. So I'm hopeful for a permanent end to this tense situation by Christmas.

Hi @robertwills,
What an awful situation you are living in! I've had awful neighbors too but nothing like you have! I'm glad you think that there may be an end to it soon. But it still wouldn't hurt to put in an official complaint in writing and in person to the local police department. Also tell the Mayor, the council and your legislative representatives. It is important to let them know how threatened and frightened you are; and that it's affecting your health. It might also strengthen the police officer's case against these crazy people.

It wouldn't hurt to carry a big pointed (very pointed!) umbrella too. It makes a good weapon; even in the summer! Also some mace or if you can't get mace, insect spray. Strong insect spray.

The other thing to do that will probably work the best, is to pray and pray a lot! The Bible talks about " Taking on the armor of God and praying fervently in the evil day to withstand the fiery darts of the wicked." (Not a direct quote.) That's about what you are going through. Whenever, you start to feel anxious on the way home, just say or think, (God can read your thoughts to him. You don't have to necessarily speak out loud.) "God, please be with me." God will be with you and you'll be safe.

I wish you the best. Let us all know what happens with your awful neighbors.
I'll say a prayer for you.

The right people in the local jurisdiction now know all about this situation. As I indicated earlier, the housing laws can make it extremely difficult to get these people out. It can take a very long time, too, You can't just tell them to leave. What may happen here is that they cause something so serious that they can't be here if they want (and hope that it doesn't involve me). If not that then if they continue their behavior they will be eventually be forced out through the legal process. My guess is there is a zero chance of this behavior going on for a long time. When it ends or by Christmas day I will post an update here.

I will also add that your suggestion to contact "legislative representatives" would probably not result in an immediate stop to the issues but it is very sophisticated in that the main purpose of government is the safety of it's citizens. So it should do something for the overall issue of crime which should be seen and felt.

Carry mace or pepper spray. No one can see them in your hand. Should someone ever approach you, you have something to defend yourself with. Have there been actual dangerous acts towards anyone?

Just walk by and ignore them. If called out or confronted, just smile and answer politely. "Have a good day". Acting intimidated or angry can escalate a situation.

Now this is just me and I don't know just how bad a group this is BUT could you ever walk by and hand them a container of homemade cookies saying, "I am baking for the holidays and made too many. Wanted to share with the neighbors. Enjoy!". Pot smokers love to snack! Lol! In other words , turn it around on them. Just a thought.

Thank you for your caring suggestions. I thought about about giving or sending them a cake or something good when they first moved in and even many weeks later I thought about it thinking it might stop the issues (shows you how naïve I was). But please listen closely: These people know exactly what they are doing. They know the sentiments of a neighbor giving them a cake and it would not matter at all! They care about no one and will do what they want, where they want. They will not change their behavior unless they are forced.

I also thought about carrying mace, which is legal where I am. But my goodness! My life has come to this? Carry mace? What in the world? The reality is that they are hanging out within feet of where I must walk, using illegal drugs and at times go into violent, rageful sounding tirades and have used body language to try intimate me. I am not aware of any batterys or physical violence but I, and someone I spoke with who knows this social subgroup, believes this is a real possibility. So it is a consideration however as I noted in an earlier post I believe the situation is winding down and should end. I will post an update by Christmas day. Thank you again for your caring reply. It has helped. I guess this is why they call it a "support group".

I would file a police report each and every time that I walked by and was intimidated, saw illicit drug transactons and/or use, aggressive gestures as threats to my safety and well-being...all of these are acts to instill fear and terror in you. THEN MOVE! and I wouldn't wait til Christmas!

Thank you. I hear you loud and clear. However, I moved to this city for a certain situation and the location of the apartment complex is perfect. The place is in "the better part" and is impeccably maintained. I am not moving because of these people. They are the ones that will move.

I won't say in a public online forum exactly what actions have and will be taken but I will say all legal actions, including standard and novel actions, have been considered in depth and some already employed to extricate these people. No one is messing around anymore.

I have never experienced such brazen, persistent, frustrating causing people in my life. And it's not just me who has experienced it. It is believed that these people may not leave on their own but will need to be physically forced out. That will be a day of celebration.
