#Liverchat: A Twitter Chat with Mayo Experts about Liver Disease

I have fatty liver disease. What can I do to keep my liver healthy? Is the Paleo Diet good for me? Is milk thistle good for my liver?

Chances are, if you have liver disease and you're just concerned with your health, you've probably wondered what kinds of things you can do to take care of your liver. With that in mind, we invite you to join us on Wednesday, September 21 at Noon ET (11am CT) as we co-host a Tweetchat with the American Liver Foundation about liver wellness and nutrition.

To address frequent discussion topics and answer your questions, we've assembled a group of experts, including several transplant hepatologists and a nutritionist.

Experts:

The last 15 minutes will be devoted to questions from the Twitter audience.

To join the chat, log in to Twitter. (Or sign up for an account. It only takes a few seconds.) Use hashtag #liverchat to see the stream of conversation.

Following a Twitter chat is easy using Twubs or Tweetchat.

Here's a how-to guide if you're new to Twitter chats.

I would love to be there if I can figure out the tweet thing.  I will have my daughter help me.  My question would be:  Since I am newly diagnosed and have a gastroenterologist taking care of me, should I also have a hepatologist?  What are the benefits of a hepatologist in the newly diagnosed patient?

Absolutely. Heptologists specialize in diseases of the liver. There were none where I lived so I went looking..Kind of like taking you mercedes to the local neighborhood garage. He can probably fix it but not as quickly and as well as a guy who just works at the Mercedes..dealership who works on nothing else.

@mollyb1968, Here is a helpful link to Mayo/Nash liver disease.
http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/nonalcoholic-fatty-liver-disease/home/ovc-20211638
There is a section on 'self-management" that you will direct your food choices. The emphasis with liver disease is to eat healthy with emphasis on fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. The directions that I was given early on was to eat a "heart healthy" diet. I currently eat heart healthy, and I enjoy a full range of delicious foods. I just have learned to rethink my meal planning and grocery shopping
Of course, any alcohol is to be avoided.
There are many heart healthy recipes out there. And the benefits extend to all areas of your health, both now and in the future!

Thank you, @colleenyoung. That is correct, if you want to follow the discussion, click the link in #1 above Wed. at noon ET. You'll see the tweets as they are posted. A lot of your questions will be answered in the first 45 minutes as the experts answer questions often sent to the American Liver Foundation. Especially those about diet. I'll select a few questions from Connect and pose them at the end, as long as time allows.
