Hashimotos connection to Barrett's...

Posted by phoggie @phoggie, Aug 30, 2016

I have Hashimoto's Disease...and Barrett's Esophagus. I have an idea the two are related some how. Does anyone have these? I am considering the Nissen Fundaplicfation, but would like to try something else first. I also have a tumor on my thyroid and waiting to see the results of my sonogram. It has been suggested I try a Gluten-free diet, but have not started that yet.
I am new here and appreciate you thoughts.

Hi @devinsmom, welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect- happy to have you here! I think you will find this a great place to meet people with similar experiences and great discussions.

Here are a couple of links I found that help explain Nissen Fundoplication:

Have you been diagnosed with Hashimotos and Barrett’s Esophagus? Can you tell us more about your experiences?

Hi @devinsmom, There is another discussion that you may want to join and post questions for other members who have been diagnosed with Barrett's.

There is also another discussion in the Digestive Health group that you may find helpful.
Barrett’s esophagus-friendly diet: https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/be-friendly-diet/

Did your doctor give you any reasons or suggestions when you asked about changing to a different or better medication?

Yes my t3 is high and my t4 is low and when I was taking levothyroxine the dichotomy between the two was more exaggerated but I have read that there are other medications out there that might work better?

@devinsmom Has the gastroenterologist suggested that a fundoplication procedure would benefit you? Your gastro MD should be able to refer you to a good surgeon if he believes that the surgery would be beneficial. Make an appointment with the doctor (not the nurse) and have a frank discussion. Will you let us know how that goes?

@devinsmom I’m sorry that I just saw your posting about needing a physician for your myriad of conditions. I did find this website with lots of information on ichthyosis. It gives some home remedies.

You might need to find a large medical center somewhat near to you. It would have many more resources and you should be able to find help. Does that sound like something you could do?
