@polishcolonel, There can be many causes for a sudden increase in AHI events. I don't think it's unusual for this to happen as myself and I'm sure others have had similar experiences. You might want to scan through the following discussion to learn what others have shared..

I haven't been using a CPAP as long as you have but have been using one for 5 years or so. Did the events just increase overnight or a short period of time?

Ok I am going nuts Last night my count was 114 events per hour! How do you breath when a person (me) has this many? Anyone else have this high count? Could it be my machine? I have a Resmed 11 with full face mask. The bridge of my nose is really hurting me. I have osteoarthritis ND grow bone like no tomorrow! Will I die if I stop?? HELP PLEASE ANYBODY Jackie

I have never seen a number like that, nor heard of one from anyone posting on apneaboard.com. I think your machine may be on the fritz. The number you cite means you're having about one event each minute while 'sleeping', but you can't be sleeping with a recordable event that, at the very least, is likely to arouse you out of quality sleep. I suggest you pay for the service of a reputable respiratory therapist who specializes in sleep apnea, even if just a one hour consult.

@msflygirlnortherncan, I agree with @gloaming that you really should talk with sleep medicine doctor or therapist. I've had different full face CPAP masks that have caused extreme redness and pain on the bridge of my nose and have tried quite a few different masks until I found one that works for me. I have been fortunate enough to have a sleep medicine PA that has given me some tips that have helped. They are really your best resource when it comes to choosing the best CPAP mask that is a good fit for you.

I’ve been using a CPAP nightly for 25 years. Before I started I had 99+ episodes an hour. Last night I had 1.7 episodes an hour.

I’m not a doctor so I don’t know why you have a full face mask. Perhaps your machine only works for controlling both in and out breathing. My CPAP only blows air. I use just a nose cover. Perhaps changing to a constant pressure machine with a nose mask would help.

Nasal mask doesn’t work to well for those of us that breath through the mouth. Wished I could use one but have tried several with no success.

Exactly -
I have chronic allergies and sinus congestion so a nose only mask is a big problem. I had nasal surgery once to open things up and I really don't want to do that again.

A good chin strap applied firmly has reduced my episodes per hour from an average of 26 to an average of 8
