Posted by Tracey001 @tracey001, Aug 18, 2011

I just found out that i have Macular Degeneration possibly Macular Dystorphy and I am scared to death. I haven't eaten in three days and I feel a huge sence of hoplessness. I would really like to talk to others who have it and how they are coping

I was just told I have very early MD AND very early glaucoma! All this found during cataract surgery exams.
Apparently, my regular eye Dr saw the spot, but since no change in 9 years, he never called it out. My eye pressure has never been abnormal, so he did not suspect, but they are seeing a smaller donut hole around the optic nerve than normal. I am awaiting my appt with glaucoma specialist. I am devastated, as I am coping with the aftermath of an aggressive breast cancer and have been hospitalized with a punctured lung, undergone hip replacement, dental surgery and cataract surgery resulting in very dry eyes and less than perfect correction. All in the space of three years.
Just when I thought I could take a breath, I got hit with this.
My mother was told in her 40’s that she had MD. She died in her mid 70’s and drove until she died. I can only hope and pray that I will be like her. I am in my mid 70’s now. I am more afraid of untreatable MD than I am the cancer. Thanks to those who have offered encouraging words.

Oh I understand so well!
After soldiering on through some difficult diagnosis, when I got my diagnosis of MD, it truly was "the straw that broke the camels back"; just seemed like the step too far!
Then I spoke to my friends, all in our 70s, and they all had it too.
They just shrugged, "so?"
Normalized the whole experience.
Then I could get back to putting my energies into my big ticket diagnosises.
Glad you are getting encouragement from others ... that's what Connect is all about.
Have a great day!

Hi, I just wanted to give you a word of encouragement. I’m actually 83 now and was diagnosed with glaucoma at least 15 years ago. I’ve had absolutely no change in my vision or eyesight since being diagnosed with glaucoma. I am on one drop per night and I get tested every year and no change. I’ve also been diagnosed with DRY AMD two years ago. I have it in one eye so far And still have no problems with my eyesight. I’m hoping I have seven or eight years before I see any big changes will keep our fingers crossed. Good luck. I hope this makes you feel a little better.

Thank you for your encouraging words. I get nothing from the Drs...no information and no positive or negative comments. I usually push for information, but I have been a bit shaken by it. Continued success in holding the line on both conditions.

Yes....sometimes it just seems like the Universe is trying to break me. I have always been able to overcome and get on with it and I hope I can this time too. I appreciate your words of positivity.

I was also recently diagnosed with MD in my right eye. I am 81 yrs old, my Dr. recommended Ares 2 eye supplements. So sorry for your other health problems, thankfully I have been healthy otherwise. Going blind is a scary thing, but many people can go many years without progression of the disease. Take your supplements and think positively. I really believe in the whole mind body thing. We just need to tell ourselves that we will be fine. Especially since your Mother did so well. Keep your spirits up, do something every day that makes you happy! 🤗

Next month will be my 67th eye injection. Yes, the shot; it will save your vision.

Be hopeful, the treatments now are quite effective. Is it wet AMD or dry AMD? Dry AMD is from what I understand better to have. I have wet AMD in both eyes and have had many eye injections and I was diagnosed 3 years ago. Actually 3 and 1/2 years ago now and I am now only getting injections a couple times a year instead of every 4 or 5 weeks.
I also have glaucoma. I was terribly nearsighted before I had my cataract surgery. I had serious side effects of my cataract surgery and had to have other surgeries to fix what they did on the first one and I still test out at 20/25 with my glasses on.
I am 70 years old.

I have been diagnosed with Mecular hole in my left eye. Is this same as degeneration. I have to go foe checkup every three months. May need surgery in future. Any suggestion / advise will be appreciated.
