Post Evenity DEXA numbers

So, I have my results after 12 months on Evenity.
Lumbar spine went from-2.5 to -1.8.
Left hip went from-2.0 to -1.8.
For the right hip and right femoral neck,
there are no scores, presumably because they are now titanium.

My PCP had wanted me on weekly 1000ug injections. The first one left me feeling unsafe to drive the next day so that was the end of that. I now take one gummy a week

@hopefullibrarian I thought our bodies flushed out B12 that was beyond what was needed. I am posting info from the Mayo site below, which you have no doubt seen. Have you been taking high doses daily? It seems high doses can raise levels- I didn't know that! I did have tingling/burning from Evenity. I guess if you stop taking B12 you will find out whether it is the vitamin or Evenity!

When taken at appropriate doses, vitamin B-12 supplements are generally considered safe. While the recommended daily amount of vitamin B-12 for adults is 2.4 micrograms, higher doses have been found to be safe. Your body absorbs only as much as it needs, and any excess passes through your urine.

High doses of vitamin B-12, such as those used to treat a deficiency, might cause:

Headache
Nausea and vomiting
Diarrhea
Fatigue or weakness
Tingling sensation in hands and feet

That's correct @windyshores. Excess B12 is expelled in the urine. First the body builds up a storehouse in the liver which it can then use when intake drops off. Not having enough of it can lead to neurological disorders or even perniciuos anemia. I'm going to guess that my storehouse in the liver is full, and that's why there's so much in my blood waiting to be expelled. I'm going to stop taking it for a while, because my body appears to just be spitting it out. Like @normahorn, it's something I'll have to keep an eye on especially because I have a genetic variant that impedes my body's ability to absorb it from food.

My body failed to read what the "experts' claim. I can only take a B12 supplement once a week (and that is at half standard dosage) or my levels also go off the chart. Another effect of high level is that I was beginning to think I may have colon cancer. Thankfully that cleared up when I stopped taking it. I now monitor every 6 months so I do not slip into the deficient range again.

@normahorn and @windyshores, Do you have your homocysteine level tested regularly? It can be one indicator of B12 deficiency. A B12 deficiency often, though not always, leads to high homocysteine levels (hyperhomocysteinemia), and one of the complications of hyperhomocysteinemia is osteoporosis. I had mine tested recently, and it was smack dab in the middle of the normal reference range.

Neither my PCP nor oncologist suggested that test. Have now sent a message to my PCP requesting that it be ordered.

AP Spine was -1.2; now -0.2
Femoral Neck was -3.0; now -2.8
Total Hip was -2.1; now -1.7
Total Forearm was -2.2; now -2.4
1/3 Forearm was -2.2; now -2.3
UD Forearm was -1.5; now -2.1

Surprised about the forearm numbers getting worse!

Those are great improvements! Except for arms - I didn’t know they measured forearms? That never comes up on my dexa.

@laurensb - Yes, I too am wondering- as on a DEXA the only pictures that have been taken for me are the lumbar spine and hips . I think it would be good to have a few markers of our extremity (legs and arms) BMD. Keep in mind those bones are cortical in nature versus the spine and the femur neck.

@susanfalcon52 @laurensb and all - So what I take from , at least your values , was that Evenity didn’t help in your arm , in fact decreases were appreciated. I would be curious if people taking Tymlos and Forteo - if any have had before and after BMD results of their arms and or legs - what those numbers might show????- Arm and leg bones are cortical in nature ( hard). Spine and hip have a mixture , soft areas and some cortical as those parts of our skeleton are more flexible for bending twisting etc…you get the idea .

I will also add that though breaking arms and legs are no fun - in the big picture fracturing your spine and or your hip can lead to more life changing issues!!!!!

Just curious. Did you do weight bearing exercises during your treatment?
I'm asking because my first physical therapist gave me a bunch of strength building exercises that targeted legs and spine. However, when I went to a second physical therapist she insisted I add exercises to target my arms and wrist, since they also suffer osteoporotic fractures.

However, I do agree with @ans. My broken shoulder was nowhere near as painful or debilitating as the broken femur and spinal fracture.
