Losing voice on tobramycin
This is my third attempt to post this question so bear with me. Dr is starting me on tobramycin, have read about the side effects. Question is for those who lost their voice was it permanently or temporary & how many days were you without a voice? Also dr said I would be on it 3 months, & I have read you take it for 28 days then go off, and then go back on it again. I am already experiencing some hearing loss due to antibiotics I was on. Is the tobramycin as bad as the big 3, I already went through that 12 years ago? Any advice would be appreciated! Thank you!

I've been on inhaled tobramycin since last July - 2 weeks on, 2 weeks off, as per NJH prescription. I didn't lose my voice the first couple of rounds, but now lose it for about a week but it comes right back. My ENT advised me to nebulize 0.9% saline after the Toby as a vocal cord rinse and that seems to be helping. I've never been on the Big 3 but Toby has not been difficult to manage. I hope you feel better soon!
Thank you for the reply.
Does it restore your voice?
I eventually got my voice back but it was after I stopped using the Toby.
Hi Stella,
I was on Tobi since last October, one week/month and lasted 7 months. Yes, I'd lose my voice every week, then would get it back in another week. Finally, I had an intolerance to that drug, but everyone is different, nothing to do with losing your voice. I am now off of Tobi and doing airway clearance 2X/day with 7% hypertonic saline hoping to keep the lungs clear. Best wishes, Peg
I've been on nebulized hypertonic saline 3% followed by Tobi for 5 years. In the past year, the compressor and Pari cups have not been reliably delivering the prescribed dose (inspite of new compressors, Pari LC plus cups, tube, and filters). So we just switched me to inhaled Tobi capsules. I will need this treatment 28 days on and 28 days for the rest of my life due to an immune deficiency. After the first two days I'm now very hoarse. I see that others are on Tobi for shorter time periods or are using hypertonic saline after taking inhaled Tobi. Are there others who are on inhaled Tobi for 28 days at a time who have gotten their voices back during that time?
