Warning!! re Cataract surgery!!

Posted by ainsleigh @ainsleigh, Aug 30, 2023

Last week I had Cataract surgery on both eyes at the same time.
I was given the wrong lens. I wanted the multifocal lens but was given ones that boost distance vision. The area needing the most help was not distance, it was close up. The doctor does not want to replace the lens for the correct ones due to increased risk but will if I insist.
The doctor and I were supposed to initial a form designating the proper lens but this did not happen. If it had been done I would have seen that they were putting in the wrong lens. Please make sure you do this before your surgery!! I will not risk more operations due to the risk
but am devastated - due to my very poor hearing, I had wanted my eyes to be as good as possible, not the case now . I will need glasses for reading.
Good luck!

When you said you were looking out the window as you were coming home, I could so totally relate with that. My flowers out front that I thought were purple are actually a brilliant blue. And I could not stop staring at the ceiling, it was such a bright white Not a dull grey. And I got to see my cat for the first time! She is beautiful! Just like when you get your very first pair of glasses when you were a kid, and you are amazed that you can see all the leaves on the trees before we just a big blur And I can see the names of road signs now, which is what I really need it for because I was getting a lot of new doctors, and I really needed to see the names of the streets I was looking for, so that is what pushed me into getting it done. I got one eye done and then the other eye was a little bit later I think it was a couple weeks. I got the Medicare standard lenses for distance, and I am very happy with them . I still need glasses because I have other problems with my eyes but it is so very great to see again! I’m thinking back, it was dangerous how I was not seeing so much but I did not realize how much I was not seeing. We are blessed to be in the United States where we can have this done so easily. And in other countries, lots of people go blind from cataracts.

@nancyc777 Yes, I am so grateful that we can get cataract surgery here in the U.S. It's such a blessing. Like you I need to wear glasses especially for reading. I chose to get transition lens like I had before the cataract surgery and I don't mind wearing glasses. I have an astigmatism in one eye that the surgery doesn't correct so the glasses help with distance vision in that one eye too. I drove on a road today that I recalled driving on shortly before my cataract surgery. It was raining that night and I couldn't see well enough to drive and so I turned the wheel over to my partner. That was frightening. With the surgery I don't have that problem anymore and can drive at night. And yes, I can now see the street names and highway signs.

It's been 2 months since I had my left eye cataract removed. I've had macular puckers for 20 years without any problem, now with IOL, I can't read like I did before the surgery. I'm only glad I didn't have the right eye done, at least with that eye I can still read numbers. Definitely not a walk in the park for me. If you have macular puckers be sure to discuss at length issues of IOL. Perhaps having a distance IOL would have been a better choice, doctor was poor communicator didn't tell me to risks

That’s very affirming. I am far sighted - even before old age. And I have developed some astigmatism in recent years. I considered a Toric lens but elected not to take that route. Too much can shift or change and then I would need a lens replacement surgery. I don’t mind wearing glasses and at least I can manage to drive after dark and in the rain.

@pb50, I also have mild astigmatism and I am satisfied to wear glasses. I love the post cataract surgery ability to drive at night even if it is raining!

Frankly, at 74 my eyes look weak and tired and eyebrows are
getting sparse. I’m happy to hide much of that with glasses 🙂

It has been 2 1/2 months since I had my left eye done. Luckily I can still read numbers with my right eye. Unless I close my left eye where I had cataract removed and it exacerbated visual distortions from macular puckers(MP), reading isn't a pleasure any more, but at least I can read with my right eye. Now I'm hoping that if left eye capsule gets "fogged" it will mask the MP distortions.

@pb50 😊 I’m with you on that. Especially the sparse eyebrows. I pick frames that enhance and I often get compliments on the frames.

That’s going to be my strategy. This eyebrow thing is new.
