Low-grade fevers weeks after COVID: Is this common with long COVID?

Posted by pdd @pdd, Feb 28, 2022

I was hospitalized for COVID and home since 2/3. On 2/24 started to have low grade fevers in the evening. Tylenol takes care of the fever. I am on home oxygen still but improving. Mobility and strength is better. Important to note immunosuppression due to cancer therapy a year ago. Lymphocytes are still depleted. Is this common with long COVID?

I'm another one. I had COVID in August 2022 but still have a few long-COVID symptoms, primarily intermittent fatigue. What's puzzling me is a persistent elevated temperature. Pre-COVID, my steady-state body temp was 97.7. Since COVID, though, it's never lower than 99.0 and often rises to 100.0+ in the evenings. I've told my doctor, who basically said, "That's interesting. Maybe it will go away in a few months." Do I care?

I know this is an older post. Wondering how you’re doing now? I tested negative for Covid on August 25 and took a few weeks to get my strength back, even though it was mild. But ever since I’ve had persistent low grade fevers in the evenings mostly of 99-100.5. I’ll have a day or two with no fevers in between. I saw my dr 2 weeks ago and she told me not to worry as long as they don’t go over 100.6. So I asked what if they continue, and do go over? She said, “I’m not worried”. Ughhh, I’m frustrated and hoping they will eventually stop for good.

Interesting...and troubling. Adding to the problem, my symptoms diminished late last spring but to my intense irritation came roaring back a few weeks ago. Same old, same old, with a twist: elevated temperature, extreme fatigue...and now, serious brain fog. Sometimes I can barely get out a coherent sentence because the words just won't come. I got the same dismissive response from my doctor; it's clear that he has nothing to offer.
What's needed is a central data base where the myriad weird symptoms of long COVID can be collected and analyzed.

I tested positive with Covid 7/4/2022. Fever of 101 , sinus congestion, cough. Sick for 3 weeks. The 2nd and 3rd week I had low grade fever 99.0-99.6 along with extreme fatigue. Went to ER, got blood work and chest xray. Doc said lungs were clear but I probably had lung inflammation. I returned to normal after 5 weeks then started exercising, then 6th week strenuous exercise. After that my lungs started hurting, difficult talking, extreme fatigue and constant low grade fever, max 99.8. Gets worse upon mental or physical exertion. This went on for 2 weeks, contacted my PCP. He told me I probably overexerted myself. Scheduled a lung pulmonary function test for Oct 5th. In the meantime I'm struggling daily with fatigue, lung pain, and low grade fever. The only thing that helped I noticed was when I took vitamin c my temp would go down. So I started taking larger amounts spaced throughout the day and all my symptoms started improving. I also take a multivitamin and sublingual vitamin B12. I'm continuing with the vitamin C until my lung function test and we'll see how that goes.

Hi. Just wondering how you’re doing? Did your test show anything? Hope you’ve had some improvements. I’m still getting the mild fevers after Covid in August.

I as well have this persistent low grade fever. I tested positive for covid on 6/3/20. I was very ill for 2 weeks. After the 2 weeks I returned to normal. On the 3rd week I started having intermittent low grade fever. My temperature now fluctuates, staying normal (98.2) for an hour or so then jumps to 99.0-100.2 for several hours . Today is day 57 of this intermittent low grade fever. When my temperature is normal I feel ok but still weak. When I have the low grade fever I feel very weak and is accompanied by an headache. I should also mention I have slight wheezing when I breathe in. Also when I take deep breaths I have a uncomfortable pressure on the right side of my chest almost as if something is lodged. I am 38 years old male, I have always been healthy and active. I hope this is temporary.

I have persistent low grade fevers too, often with headaches, even mildly stressful situations bring them on and get worse as day goes on. I am 1 year out post covid- other than OTC meds like tylenol, any other suggestions? This seems to be a problem for many but I find nothing written about it re: long covid.... any practitioners that can help? My PCP doesn't know what to do with me and the immunologist says everything is ok!

Thanks for the Vitamin C tip - how much do you take and how often? Would a B complex help as well for headaches?

Hi. How are you feeling? Still dealing with fevers? I am 6months post Covid and the fevers persist. They’re on an off and always 99-100.5. Yesterday afternoon I started with extreme chills and my temp was 101.9 the highest it’s ever been. Have been on Tylenol and Motrin for the last 24hrs. I called my dr and he’s stumped because my tests are all normal. He suggested I just go to urgent care to be sure but I don’t see the point. I’ll wait for my dr appointment with him and hope that the fevers subside. These fevers are so worrisome and not fun! I’m definitely know they came from Covid, I just wish they knew more about it.

Hi, all. I am a 73 year old woman who tested positive for Covid on March 16, 2024 and began Paxlovid on the same day. I finished Paxlovid on the 20th and thought I was on the mend but after a couple days my symptoms returned; cough, headache, body aches and low grade fever. Today is April 1st and although most of my symptoms have faded my nearly nightly low grade fevers are still with me with occasional night sweats. Today my fever started in the early afternoon, but that is not the usual. Thank you all for sharing your experiences here, even though I’m a bit disheartened to hear how long some of you have been dealing with this. My hope is that modern medicine will soon have an explanation for this phenomenon and hopefully a way to resolve it for all of us.

I think the low-grade fevers after covid seem common. My wife and I both came down with Covid on 2/3/24. She recovered in about 2 weeks. I was dealing with low grade fevers mostly starting around noon thru evening hours which lasted until early March. Tylenol did help. Now, 2 months out, still dealing with some foggy thinking which I did not have before February, it is slowly improving.

Thank you for your input. That you stopped having the fevers after about a month is encouraging. I’m hoping for the same. I hope you reach a full recovery soon. My best to you and your wife.

I found out from others that it is a slow process. In fact, my sister was about 6 weeks before her temp returned to her normal. Wish you the best as well.
