Are there other reasons a person might have a larger aorta?

Posted by mans @mans, Mar 2 4:46am

I recently had to change doctors after 35 years with the same one. He told me about 3 years ago after having a AAA screening ct scan that I had a slight enlargement at 4cm and that it was nothing to worry about. I completely forgot about it. About 2 years ago I became enthusiastic about lifting weights at the gym. I have been enjoying it immensely showing off in front of these weakling millennials, what old man, strength is all about! I have worked up to 70lb dumbbells. Well that was before I visited my new doctor and had a new AAA scan. My new doctor is much more concerned about my aorta measurement which is still 4cm after 2 years of heavy weightlifting. So now I am concerned and confused about what I can or cannot do.

There is some truth in what your doctor states. Not all experts would agree with him. Are you seeing an ascending aorta specialist?
In the meantime, be careful about lifting. Some say nothing over 20 lbs; others are more liberal - maybe 30 lbs. Keep your blood pressure controlled. Most patients are also on beta blockers.
Until they know the "speed" with which your aneurysm is growing, you would be smart to have a MRI angiogram every six months.

Hello my friend. I am 28 years old with an ascended aorta of 4.2 cm. I got tested randomly for no reason. My uncle is a heart doctor. When he told me i got really stressed. He told me he has seen many football players and weight lifters with a dialated aorta before. Hw told me to do a CT scan with contrast. I did. It showed my aorta at 4.16 cm. I askes him if i can keep lifting. He told mw i can go on with my life as if lime nothing happened. I was really stressed for a long time. I got an echo after 6 months. Still at 4.2 cm. I quit smoking tho. Now i will keep making apointments every 6 months or so to see if it keeps growing or not. But my uncle told me to forget about it and keep living

There is an eating plan called trim healthy momma. It’s a couple of sisters in Tennessee or there about. When I followed it I lost almost 75lbs. No sugar but sugar substitutes. They have some good snacks. The cream cheese and peanut butter bites with chocolate chips was my go to for sweets. I should be on it now but can’t follow it without my wife helping me cook and she doesn’t want to have to plan that much. It takes a lot of work. I should figure it out and do it on my own. I am not as heavy but still about 40 lbs from where I should be and at least 30 off from where the doctor wants me to be.

I have been having some strange beats and sensations in my chest. I know something is going on but not sure what. Sent an Apple Watch ECG to my cardiologist who said it was normal but immediately ordered a monitor for two weeks and then out of the blue my chart on line says to schedule my next echo and complete blood work up 6 months early.

My biggest problem is that I have diverticulitis which makes it so I strain hard everyday almost even with eating lots of bran and avoiding nuts and rice etc. I am a walking time bomb but enjoying each day and trying to not focus on what if. Cheers

I’m 62 and just found out I have a 4.4 aortic “root” which was normal size 14 months ago. I lift weights 3 times a week alternate mountain bike combined 6 days a week for an hour. I don’t lift extremely heavy on chest and shoulders because of my shoulder joints are jacked from other sports. My arteries are 0-25 percentile. I have plaque but it doesn’t appear to be my issue. My issue appears to be blood pressure ranges 127/77 to 160/95 + I have sleep apnea. I use a CPAP. + I consume too much sugar….otherwise diet is fine. I am 5”11 213 which is considered obese. I went to the top aorta surgeon in my state and i have mayo cardio doc. Surgeon indicates watch and scan every six months but lift and workout at will. My cardio doc indicates the same. I’m on low dose staten and blood pressure. The surgeon asked me to start taking beta blocker. I haven’t started taking….don’t want to feel like crap tired sleepy etc. oh and he suggested losing 15-20 pounds. I would love to be at 190 to 195. I haven’t been below 200 since I was 18. I could lose 20 and look great but my body fat is already at 14-16%. Any thoughts on beta blocker .? Or lifting - correct breathing is important to cause least possible pressure. Some mentioned specific breathing concern ~ what not to do. .? Also sugar. I am addicted. I can not break the habit of eating an ice cream bar or two before bed or if nothing in the fridge because my cupboards are bare to help avoid sugar I will find some sweet ….use imagination. I am open for advise criticism whatever.

I noticed a comment, and I cannot find it again, but someone was asking about pro venting growth of aortic aneurysms. Mentioned the calcium CT showed my aortic root dilation at 4.9. The echo cardio performed a month later measured it at 4.4.. not sure what to think about that discrepancy, although echoes are more precise than a CT. One year, my aortic route was normal this was prior to getting a pacemaker implanted to address low heart rate at 32 low averaging high 40s. Between receiving the calcium CT score and the echo I found what I’m told is one of the best aortic surgeons in the state. He shared with me that he has patience that were diagnosed with a 4.4 and it did not grow after decades however, the norm is eventually you’ll require surgery. He also put me on beta blocker indicating this would help alleviate some of the pressure on my aortic route when exercising and also regular activity. I am five 10 1/2 at 2:10 pounds avid mountain biker and weight, lifting lighter weights more wraps. He okayed me to continue to do both suggesting to make sure I am breathing correctly and avoiding heavy heavy weights. As mentioned I am 62. I’m not sure if this helps anybody but thought I would share that information. My question has to do with the pacemaker does anybody have experience or an opinion about the possibility, adding a pacemaker, keeping my heart rate at a minimum of 60 could have caused my 4.4 cm aortic root dilation?

My aortic root is 4.4 CM and both my cardiologist and a aortic specialist/surgeon indicated it was OK to lift weights no restrictions other than do not go extremely heavy, breathe, breathe correctly and control blood pressure. Sidenote, pay attention to the low number on your blood pressure has a direct correlation with aortic challenges. My blood pressure is 125/84. The 84 is the issue for me.

Great job losing all that weight. I have a 20 pound tire around my waist. I need to shed per the heart surgeon. The closer to BMI you are the better. I’m 5 ‘11 - 210-215. but 20 pounds is as good as it gets for me. I am having a hard time losing weight. I will check into it thx ML

You can break your sugar addiction... (and I think you have to or this or other things will not end well) you don't say what your A1C is or your fasting glucose number is. Sounds like you're working out enough to keep body fat in check. But sugar does a lot more than make us fat. I would strongly encourage you to explore that issue more deeply and take the sugar addiction more seriously.

My A1C is 5.5 but my fasting sugar the day blood was taken for testing my blood sugar was 106. I noticed recently if I eat sweets right after dinner vs before I go to bed I wake up with 95-99 blood sugar in the morning. When I eat ice cream for example at 10:00 at night then go to bed at 11:00 my sugar is 102 to 125. This is probably obvious to most people, but I’m a little dense at times. The points that were made from the thread we need to stop eating sugar all together. Thx for feedback
