Am I crazy? I hear music in my head all the time since covid.

I have had covid twice. The last time was June 2023. It was very mild, like a cold. However, ever since, I hear music inside my head ALL the time, unless I am concentrating on something else. Also I have random, moderate attacks of vertigo. I haven’t shared this with my doctor, only my wife and a couple close friends. Are these hallucinations? It’s always music I know I have heard, but not always music I like. I am getting tired of it. I am certain that it started with my most recent bout of covid. Anyone?

I had classical and big band sounding music in my head following my 3rd Covid Vaccination. It last about a month and made it hard to sleep. It did resolve itself.

Music and Covid - who knew we would talk about these things together?! I play guitar as a hobby. Work from home gave me a lot of time to practice, and I’ve gotten much better. I don’t read or write music, mainly improvise. At times I will get a new song in my head, and can pick up the guitar and play it. New songs have to start somewhere! As for tinnitus, yes, there is some of that also but not too bad yet. I believe I got Covid very early in the pandemic - before vaccines were available - but my symptoms have been neurological, not respiratory. My first symptom was amnesia (possibly a focal seizure). Three years into the pandemic I was diagnosed with Epilepsy. I’m on all sorts of meds now, for Epilepsy, anxiety, and depression. The meds tend to tamp everything down, or at least make the tinnitus less bothersome.

I was going to respond to each of the comments above but this seems easier. I got covid very early on, before vaccines, neurological symptoms worse than respiratory symptoms. I was able to get the vaccine finally in June/July of 2021. Six weeks later I completely lost the hearing in my right ear. I already had mod to severe hearing loss in the left ear. Initially I heard only sounds like thunder, which then what sounded like a Gregorian chant - the same one over and over again, 24 hours a day. 4 years later I still hear the Gregorian chant about 50% of the time, with the other 50% of the time hearing a variety of songs, organ music (hymns), electronic music, muffled unintelligible voices like hearing a TV on in the other room, sometimes just piano scales and chords, engine sounds... I'm actually amazed it doesn't make me feel crazy. I can actually sing along if I want to... Two ENTs and a neurologist call them auditory hallucinations. I was told that the musical auditory hallucinations occur more frequently in people who are musical. It is a form of tinnitus. I never hear buzzing or ringing.

You are absolutely not crazy, I hear it as well. It’s usually when I am transitioning from one situation to another. I also have tinnitus, I believe it is all related to the blood flow and micro clots that this crazy, mysterious long-haul does to our central nervous systems. I read there are more than 200 reported symptoms long haulers have been afflicted with, I have roughly 35 I could uniquely identify. I seem to have the music thing, the ringing and hissing, also started with a lot of confusion and ME/CFS, also highly anxious, depressed, and hypersensitive to most stimuli. Three years of this now, today is actually my three year Crapiversary! I’m hearing about a lot of new therapeutics, and that the medical gaslighting is being addressed systemically. I sure hope we keep this going, and never feel like we are crazy. This is very real, and the numbers don’t lie!

You are not crazy!!! I experienced this too. I heard music when no music was playing and if I was actually listening to music, the song playing sounded different. It was as if I had swimmers ear. Thankfully it did not last that long. I want to encourage you to share this with your healthcare provider, then again, if your healthcare provider will immediately prescribe psych meds and consider having you straight jacket, maybe not. I didn’t share this with anyone and eventually it went away. Hey, if you’re crazy, add me to the list.

For the past 4 years, I have been hearing songs that I recognize by a group that I would describe as a talented quartet. Volume is at a very acceptable level. I keep a list of the songs on my "Juke Box" and they total about 130. The music never interrupts conversations or activities. I had a brain scan and related tests and counsel and everything came out negative. A song will sometimes repeat but I can quickly change to a song of my choosing simply by humming a few bars. All things considered, not such a terrible malady for a 90-year old reasonably healthy man. I am told there is no cure for my musical hallucinations and I am OK with that.

Does the music bring you joy?

I would trade music for the fax machine screeching sound in my left ear that developed after Covid infection this January! Also when I turn my head the right ear ringing changes pitches up and down. Have had tinnitus over 20 years and learned to mostly ignore it and use white noise for sleep. Covid sure interrupted the peace I had learned with tinnitus and changed the quality of the sounds for the worsens. But have learned once again how to mostly ignore it. The sure way to be miserable is to start thinking and talking about it, because it gets going like an angry beaver! 😆

Well, I would trade you on your musical hallucinations for no taste or smell! I had Covid in December of 2022 and still have no smell or taste. I’ve had 3 and have a 4th scheduled for a Stellate Ganglion Block injection into my neck with Lidocane to help regain them. It’s a “Thing” they’re doing to help those with loss of taste/smell. It’s only given me a slight improvement in smell, but I haven’t tasted anything since December of 2022! It’s quite awful, so I would just go with the music!
