Am I crazy? I hear music in my head all the time since covid.
I have had covid twice. The last time was June 2023. It was very mild, like a cold. However, ever since, I hear music inside my head ALL the time, unless I am concentrating on something else. Also I have random, moderate attacks of vertigo. I haven’t shared this with my doctor, only my wife and a couple close friends. Are these hallucinations? It’s always music I know I have heard, but not always music I like. I am getting tired of it. I am certain that it started with my most recent bout of covid. Anyone?

Oh all of us and especially now to @deanha and @fiddlechick - I'm trying to research more on tinnitus and "musical tinnitus" sometimes called "musical hallucinations." I saw an ENT who basically shrugged. When I asked if their office were treating any patients who had had COVID and had the same symptoms, they said they "thought so." (Not encouraging.) It was a doctor I see for something else that told me these are called "musical hallucinations" and I've since done more reading and intend to do much more of what I can find.
Be aware too: mine started and then I started losing my hearing which is now so bad talking on the phone (mobile more; standard a bit less) is impossible and in person? I can't hear my spouse who sits just 3' away from me when we watch TV. Even at dinner next to each other, it's difficult. Some TV I hear well - oddly or not, the new Ken Burns' on Da Vinci on PBS was clear; the PBS Newshour is all mumbles.
What I've read is that standard tinnitus (often whooshing sounds) or musical type can be prelude to hearing loss - it is there to "fill a space."
There are times I can 'tune it out'; there are others like yesterday and today that are making me nuts - it's so constant and changing. The humor and what I want to learn is why some of us hear what we do. I call them my "stations" or "channels" - way too much Christmas music still ("Rudolph" on repeat), then I hear what I call my "Walter Cronkite station" (hear it now - it's a low voice that talks and talks but I can' hear the words.) I've heard show tunes, old pop music ("Flying Purple People Eater!!! that on 12/30 after too many rounds of it changed into "We Shall Overcome.") I SWEAR I'm not nuts! Meaning I had none of this before COVID (contracted end of March 2023) and this was a second round of symptoms. Sometimes like for some of you, it's whooshing, or like the heat has turned on; other times it sounds like a flock of birds or children on a playground. It is NOT ok and what I've also read is it could be a neuro issue.
I saw an Infectious Disease doc last week, the first one, incl. the one considered a long covid specialist in our city, who has truly listened to me and examined the rash acquired w/ COVID that's never been cultured and continues. Waiting for follow up after the holidays.
Friday, I'll get an audiology test again and fitted for hearing aids which I hear do nothing to remove the tinnitus.
The worst is not being able to stick my fingers in my ears or wear a headset and make it stop. Just an hour of quiet would be nice.
If it's all of us, why is there not a study of this and hearing loss to COVID or if there is, how do we get in it?
JE w/ Cronkite station blasting and whooshing too.
I’ve had tinnitus for most of my life, when I was younger I thought everyone had it but later when I mentioned it to someone, they would look confused by what I was hearing. I eventually found out that it had a name, tinnitus but not much else, no treatments were available, I don’t think they know much about it or what caused it. My tinnitus would come about anytime, no pattern or anything to relate to it but now I’m aware of some triggers like aspirin, anti inflammatory meds, alcohol, I avoid them but it doesn’t stop them from coming back. I discovered by accident that the sound of running water sometimes stops it but if I walked away it would start again. I’ve learned to live with this because I don’t have any other choice, I figured that some people live with much worse. I also experience music in my head, it can be any tune, something on tv or the radio would stay in my head, I would try thinking of another tune but that would stick in my head, I did some research on it and there was something called “ear worms”, nothing to do with the name but apparently it’s more common with people who live with a lot of stress, it was interesting to read about how you can try to control it, good luck with that.
I can’t recall the circumstances, but years ago a physician in New Jersey had some sort of a head injury, which left him with what he thought was the ability to hear and play classical piano. He took lessons as well and eventually had a concert at a musical in New York and I always remember that so that when I heard about your Problem, this came to mind. I hear music a lot during my long Covid journey and before as well, when I hear something on the radio that I may or may not like. It’s funny I can hear it verbatim and I am a musician and can almost play from listening to it, but as soon as I hear notes that I am applying it goes away, unfortunately Hope that helps
