Leg and Foot cramps.

Posted by danny67 @danny5, Feb 5 1:10am

wondering if there is anybody with this problem. i get muscle cramps in both legs and feet. but they are more frequent and worse in my right leg. from just below the knee. and into the foot. always at night, when i'm in bed. bad enough that the right foot twitches also.
i hope this is in the correct discussion post.

Danny 5 , Thanks! That’s exactly what’s happening with me! The Doc only wants to see me once a year, then spends only 10 minutes with me, and doesn’t complete exam, and rushes me out the door! There is a sign in the front panel of windows, where you check in! Self check in! I you are late, by even a minute, check in at window, and your appointment will have to be rescheduled! Nice! Absolutely no understanding, or concern for patient’s reason for being late! For me, having Parkinson’s, I walk slowly, and am unable to move fast! They could care less! D

right. they don't care. if you're late & they cancel the appointment. they say you should have left earlier. they refuse to take into account of your issues and traffic. and other things. i tell the nurse. if the doctor is 5 minutes late, that i should charge her like they do us. and all she does is laugh and give me some lame excuse. they don't care about my excuse. so i don't care about theirs. d

Danny5, I once had a Doctor, who had a nonchalant attitude, with me, about helping me with pain control, after I fractured vertebrae 3- a crushing back injury. He told me to take over the counter, mild 1 tablet Naproxen, for years! Then, an amazing thing happened! He injured his back, lifting heavy stuff, that really nagged him, pain wise! He completely changed that nonchalant attitude toward me. He was helpful and understanding, and prescribed Empirin with codeine, to help me, with my back pain! At the time, I had an extremely demanding physical job, and my back pain levels were tough to deal with, at times! So, with the new pain prescription, I got the relief I needed! I realize Docs are human, too! This example stands out, though, where I spent years suffering, that may have been avoidable, if I had had a medical care provider that had cared enough about my well-being!

Thank you for your thoughtful, and understanding reply! It’s great to feel there is some support, from fellow sufferers of painful ailments, that, sometimes, medical clinicians seem to be apathetic, and not too sympathetic of our suffering! I fractured my lower back, back in 1976, from a horse riding accident! Going to the ER, the hospital had to put me in the hallway, on a gurney-no room in the ER! They did little to help me. I had a broken nose, and swollen eye. Ever since, vision in that eye is not as good as the other eye, and I have a droopy eyelid (ptosis)! I had to wear a back brace for a while, because of crushing vertebrae injury, at L-3! So, over the years I’ve had a lot of back and eye trouble! I’ve gotten very little understanding, from medical professionals, to help me improve my eyesight, or better deal with back pain! So, nowadays, after the COVID epidemic, I have noticed, that empathy and understanding are even more of a problem, where I live, which is heavily populated, over 150,000 residents, and we have only one hospital! So, with many retirees here, sometimes we feel shortchanged a bit, when dealing with medical professionals. This is where, the support of patients with similar ailments, having a forum, like this, to discuss their ailments with, is very helpful! I’m glad Mayo Clinic has provided us this opportunity! Thanks again for your supportive words! I hope you and I will, someday, get better relief, for the pins and needles, and numbness, that we have to deal with! Meanwhile, we can communicate this way, which is helpful! Wishing you the best! Take care! 🤠Doug

Absolutely Doug 🤠!

Having Mayo, its moderators, understanding members has been so helpful, in more ways than I can express! For information, knowledge, understanding support is SO integral to general well being.

That is a frightening experience you had! And to not receive support at time of and way - post accident is a huge problem! That is nuts that you are not getting the kind of treatment that will make a difference.

Had an epidural yesterday. Jury will be out. I’m hoping for some relief. It sore were injected. We soldier on.

Feel better as best as you can and be well!

i wish i could get an epidural for my back. my PCP only gave me Lidocaine 5% patches. just 30 with no refill. NOTHING. she says do PT. and i'll give you a muscle relaxant. for a bulging disc and Spondylosis. WTFH? how does a muscle relaxant help those? by the way, she believes that PT is a cure all for everything. time for a NEW doctor, again. God, i hate doing this again. d

I’m sorry Danny. That sounds very frustrating.

If you could get a consult with the pain management doctor that would be enlightening and helpful. First thing they want to see is documentation, reports.

The pain doctor who does the actual injections and work up could help you. Does your ins. Require referrals to specialists?

Ask the doctor for a referral to a pain management doctor. That you would at least like a consultation. That could not hurt a thing. It’s not overreaching.

Let your pcp know how the pain patches have been working and how your mobility has been effected (negatively) in what ways that it is - giving her a way to save face and modify her direction with your care.

I would ask her in what specific ways would a muscle relaxant help you. So she can explain her rationale. I take it for the relentless muscle spasms I get in different muscle groups. It so far seems to keep the spasms from “seizing up” to the point I can’t move (pain).

Before my first year of PT (~24 visits allowed by ins) which was last year, I was so worried I would seize up and become unable to take paratransits bumpy ride. It was so bad. I had to reschedule a couple, but tried hard to keep my upper body from shifting on the bus ride there. The spasms were that bad.

After PT, when they focus on your specific pains, it can help and does…However, if you don’t have all radiology and other reports they could potentially bring on more pain because of not being aware of potential trouble spots.

Like my neck and the trouble I have in it for example. Not addressed in 2023 but I knew I was limited because of certain moves I could not physically do due to sudden pain level it brought on. Did not have any cspine radiology reports of it (yet) so I refuse to go get shots in neck until I get mri of spine! The muscle shot was great at relieving the back spasm, to a degree, but enough so I could walk. These shots are helpful.

Pt is designed to help and relieve pain (so my guy states over and over), but acute or chronic pain that is disabling needs to be addressed in good time because, I mean how the hell are you going to get there while in such pain.
Needs some attention, different attention.

Push her for a consult. No harm, No foul.

Let us know how it goes. Hang in there.

Thank God no referrals needed! That is great! I don’t need referrals either. It really been another life line extended.

Best of luck Danny. Hope you find a good pain management doctor!
