Are you Living Alone with MCI? Research Opportunity!

Feb 21, 2023 | Dona Locke | @DrDonaLocke | Comments (7)

This week I want to make everyone around the country living alone with Mild Cognitive Impairment aware of this research opportunity.  This is a resaerch project approved by the Institutional Review Board at Arizona State University. If you are interested you contact them via the information provided on the EPIC Living Alone Flyer.

Are You or Someone You Know Living Alone and Experiencing the Beginnings of Memory Loss as You or They Age?

Do You Have Questions or Concerns About How to Handle These Changes?

EPIC Living Alone Can Help Develop the Skills Needed to Address Early-Stage Memory Loss.

What is EPIC Living Alone and Who Can Participate?

  • Free virtual workshop series for people facing early-stage memory loss who are living alone and independently in the community.
  • EPIC Living Alone participants learn new skills and strategies to gain a better understanding of memory changes and their impact; learn how to communicate about memory changes with others; and build an individualized future healthcare plan which identifies care values and preferences for care tasks; encourages the designation of a primary care partner; and develops an informal and formal support network.
  • Individuals with memory changes participate together in a small group via Zoom with others challenged by memory loss.  The workshop includes seven group sessions held a week apart, and each session is two and a half hours in duration.
  • Compensation is offered for project interviews to help advance early-stage programs.

In the interest of fully disclosure, Mayo Clinic and I (@DrDonaLocke) are not involved in the project directly; it is run by a colleague, Dr. David Coon, at Arizona State University here in Phoenix. I am indirectly involved in that I helped provide patients for an earlier focus group that lead to development of this intervention. In addition, Dr. Coon has asked if I would observe an intervention if needed, in order to provide an opinion as a professional who also works with patients with Mild Cognitive Impairment. I have no financial interest in the project.

I am an 80 year old Michigan mother. Husband and I have a 47 year old daughter who is unaware that she is unaware ( I don’t know how else to describe her). She was independently fine then her life has slowly slipped downward, can’t explain , and was diagnosed as MCI 6-8 th grade functioning level. We are caregivers. She is currently on monthly injection of Aristada for psychosis, schizophrenia but doesn’t understand a need for it.
Lives alone. No interests. Money a definite issue for us. On SSDI which is insufficient. Has a therapist but contests everything.

I am so sorry. I have just been diagnosed with MCI so I am just learning what this means for me. I wish I could give you a way forward.

Thank you. May I ask about your age and how you came to your conclusion? I am totally lost as to how our daughter came to be in this situation. Of course it really doesn’t matter I suppose because the point is here we are and where to go from here? Perhaps we should try to get in on some of these “sessions” if we can figure out how?

I am 73. I have been evaluated at Mayo Clinic Florida & have
Completed most of all the testing to be done. I am married so I am not living alone although we are now figuring out how we will manage going forward. I am following the MCI support group on Connect. I have told my family & several close friends about my diagnosis & they are supportive.
It does sound like you are in a very difficult situation with your daughter. I would encourage you to participate in this forum for support & information

I discovered Epic Living Alone in an email regarding info and support for living alone with MCI. I did enter my name, address and phone number on one of the screens, but I’m not sure that I successfully made a contact which will result in making a connection with your resources. I assume I am corresponding with professionals at Mayo Clinic. I don't need appointments with Mayo but I hope for whatever info or support I can find. My doctors are at UWMadison Hospital and Clinics in Madison where I have had an MRI showing a lesion from an old stroke in a memory area of my brain. With ADHD also, I am having great difficulty managing my days.
