What is a podcast?

Podcasting is a method of distributing audio and visual information using the internet. The electronic files can be downloaded to electronic devices (like smart phones) or computers and replayed at a convenient time. You can subscribe to a podcast which means you will be alerted to new content, or you can simply search and listen to a podcast when it’s convenient for you.

Why would you want to use podcasts?

Podcasts offer a versatile and convenient way to learn more about topics that interest you. With the ability to stream content on your mobile device, you can listen while commuting, flying, exercising, or anytime you have internet access. This makes podcasts an excellent tool for maximizing productivity and learning, seamlessly fitting into your busy lifestyle.

Where can you find podcasts?

There are many ways to get your podcast content. You can use any of the programs out there such as PodBean, Apple Podcasts, iHeart Radio, Spotify, Amazon, Pandora, Pocket Casts, YouTube…the list goes on and on. Research to find the app that best fits your needs. And caution – some of these are free to use and some may charge a fee.

As with any medical information you find online, you want to be sure that the information you see is coming from a trusted source. Trusted sources for medical information include medical systems, insurance companies, heath care organizations and government websites.

Does Mayo Clinic produce podcasts?

At Mayo Clinic, it is our goal to deliver trusted health information worldwide. One method of meeting this goal is creation of podcasts. Mayo Clinic has many podcasts with information for doctors, researchers, parents, caregivers and patients. These are just a few of our podcast options that might interest you.

Mayo Talks

While Mayo Talks is generally written for family medicine and primary care physicians, it has topics that could be helpful for the general public. Some patients, especially those in need of an organ transplant, want to be aware of even some of the more complex information about their diagnosis in the event that they need to advocate for themselves in medical situations. Mayo Talks has transplant related podcasts in addition to topics such as obesity, OB/GYN topics, genetics, equity and inclusion and even AI content.
