Have you been prescribed zonisamide for seizures? My experience.

Posted by lsittll @lsittll, Apr 12, 2020

I have uncontrolled seizures for 53 years. I have taken almost every medication possible. I almost died from a rare side effect of a newer drug. My doctor is very understanding about this. She has added zonisamide to the Lamcital and Depakote I take. It has done miracles! What once was 6 or 8 seizures monthly is now 1 a month. Zonisamide (a sulfa drug) for seizures?

Saw my neurologist today. I now taking 300 mg of zonisamide at night. Been on this dosage now for 2 weeks. Basically with few side affects. I am I am somewhat nauseous but I am dealing with that. So far no seizures. Neurologist says that she is in hopes that this medicine will control the seizures. It has been 2 months since my last seizure Praying I will get my life back. Need to keep stress levels at a minimum as stress will trigger seizures.

Hi Murphy!
Thank you for the update! I'm so glad to hear that with the reintroduction of 300 mg, you're experiencing fewer side effects and staying seizure-free.
I know nausea can be really uncomfortable—some AEDs have caused it for me too. What's helped me is having food and glutamine about an hour before taking my Keppra.
It's worth checking with your doctor about ways to better manage the nausea and whether glutamine might be helpful for you as well.
Crossing my fingers that you continue seeing good results with this medication!

Hi Murphy!
Staying positive like you're doing really does help - our minds are incredibly powerful!
Can you tell me more about these weird feelings? Curious to know more about them.
How have you been this past week?

I would say the ‘weird’ feelings are like falling into like a moment of
depression or a sinking feeling like something bad is going to happen. I pray myself out of it Say’ Hey girl you are lucky so much better than a lot of people. You are blessed so snap out of it!!’
I am doing better. So far over 2 months w/o a seizure.

Hi Murphy!
I know firsthand that the challenges of epilepsy treatment aren't always easy to navigate, but please hold onto that determination of yours.
Those "weird feelings" you mentioned can be side effects of certain AEDs—I've experienced them myself with some medications I've tried. During those times, the support of my neuropsychologist has been invaluable in helping me stay the course with my treatment.
Did these feelings start after you began taking Zonisamide? If you haven't already, I'd encourage you to talk with your doctor about them. Working with a psychologist or neuropsychologist might also be really helpful, as it has been for me.
Keep that positive spirit!
Chris

@1710dave I've been on Lamictal for about 10 years. Its helped immensely with my TLE and was seizure free until recently. The seizures I've been having are very mild but still concerning. I also get myoclonic leg jerks. My neurologist recently added Zonisamide which I haven't started yet but have heard from people in these groups it works well w/o terrible side effects. Fingers crossed! I hope the Lamictal works well for you - I've had almost no side effects.

I started taking Zonisamide 2 weeks ago. I started slow - 50mg for 1 wk/1x day then 100 for 1 wk/1x day and just started on 150mg/1x day. I had no side effects until now but its pretty mild. I have a headache on the back of my head just above the spine. This is only the first day and I've read headaches are pretty common and usually go away. I wanted to know if anyone here has had this side effect and how long it lasted. The only other thing I've noticed is my food is tasting bland. No big deal there - I could stand to lose a few pounds, lol.

I have been on zonisamide now for a little over 2 months. Started at 100mg for 2 weeks. Then 200 mg for 3 weeks. Been on 300 mg now for about 4 weeks.
I haven’t had the headaches but I will say my appetite sucks. Food does not taste good at all. But on the positive side I have not had any seizures. I do notice I need to keep hydrated or my blood pressure really drops and I feel really tired. You should mention to your Dr about your head aches.
Hang in there.
