Y-90 liver cancer treatment: What's your experience?

Posted by mudshark @mudshark, Dec 8, 2019

I recently was treated with y-90 on a tumor in my liver. I am interested in knowing of others that have had experiences good, or bad, and of long term results. I have had prior resection of the liver to remove a tumor but a new tumor surfaced in a different section. I am hoping the y-90 will prove to be a more permanent solution. Thanks

Well, we will have an informative Nov/Dec. Don't forget to get him to drink at least two bottles of Ensure Plus per day. Weight is all about caloric intake and two bottles a day is 700 calories a day. They make great flavors but be sure to the the Ensure Plus not just the regular Ensure.

Diane thanks I do try to get him to drink ensure plus but some resistance to it. He has started to eat and appetite increase.
Yesterday I made green beans with potatoes and olive oil an he loved it. Sometimes when I ask what he wants to eat he tells me I will ask for it. Independent Greek spirit lol
Sometime I feel like a Greek grandmother running around the yard with grandchildren and a spoon and bowl saying eat eat lol humorous vision on my part
Thanks

Diane have posted don’t know if I am posting correctly.
We had an oncology nurse practiser meeting via zoom today it was a bit better as she had an observer (S) and she did Address some issues.
Labs coming up nov 26, mri scan dec 1
I scheduled an appointment with liver surgeon on dec 2 and nurse practitioner said why do you want to see him. He is a surgeon. Am a bit confused as I want all choir to let me know what they sing.
Gastroenterologist on nov 23 to understand fecal fat qualitative abnormal.
Husband is eating a bit more and enjoying the food but getting him his weight back on and muscle mass is my goal.
Y90 we will see after MRI what it shows..that is why I want liver surgeon to meet with us. Husband is wary as he is tired with all the appointments.
Need to work on these items.
Keep in touch

My spuse had is second Y90 right lobe therapy previous was left lobe there were a series of issues oncology never addressed such as hpylori and now fecal fat qualitative abnormal we have gastroenterologist appointment and next week we meet with the surgeons who removed right cecal mass
Oh and he also had celiac plexus block iR DEPT AR
HOPKINS IS PHENOMENAL AND THE BEST WHO DID Y90
as for olive oil I believe I mentioned the college that did a study and findings are it may help. I personally do two shots every morning as my late mom used to do it high quality Greek olive oil that peppers in Back of the throat is what I use direct from the farm in Greece
Read it I believe it was hunter college or one of those research institutions my head swims with everything we have gone through
One thing I have found is you must be on top of oncology as they are overloaded with cases and sometimes I have found they do not read notes accordingly especially when nurse practioner get involved
Next week gastro surgeons will meet with us talk to their top liver doctor and the rest of the team to see and analyse everything
This is a rough journey for patient and caregiver but as our triage at IR said no one can take HOPE away And we haveY90 working to see after scan in December
Prayers everyday for all patients doctors Nd caregivers
Let me know what you find and where are you having Y90
Let’s keep in touch

Hi Yiiannis, I looked up the article on olive oil and it looked convincing. The problem is the olive oil must be high in oleocanthal content and that is not listed on the label. Do you know of a brand that contains it. I too have a CT at the end of November to see if the little carcinoma devils are still dead. Diane

Diane good luck to you at the end of a month. We too have a scan mri in early December to see if Y90 is working. I have been contacting the depts at Hopkins to see my husband, and finally we have gastronsurgeon meeting on Nov 15, gastroenterologist on November 23 to see why he is loosing weight due to fecal qualitative stool test being abnormal. And the surgeons group will confer with their liver doctor. I just question why oncologist does not do a total holistic approach to cancer. My family doctor did simple tests to discover this..oncologist and nurse practitioner just won’t address unless I push the,
As for olive oil, being Greek I bring in containers of Greek olive oil from my late moms farm and use it at home. Don’t know where you are but Greek olive oil pure extra virgin that peppers in the back of your mouth when you take a shot is good. I started to market my olive oil and when locals have tried it they say it is better than supermarket olive oil. But Americans use it so sparingly.
I took some to our IR doctor who is a gem and he loved it. He also makes his own sourdough bread and uses it for dipping. I told him let’s get husband on road to cure and I will have gallon jug next time I see you.
Let me know is you need anything
And keep me informed
Yiannis

My husband just had on Tuesday his second Y90 treatment of the right lobe. In September he had the left lobe Y90 the first one was kind of rough as before that he had a celiac plexus block.
The Tuesday Y90 went really well with few if none complications. Our IR doctor at Hopkins and his team were the finest most caring and compassionate group! In fact his triage team is the finest and most caring group.
He has experienced weight and muscle mass loss since July due to oncology not addressing some issues. And I am upset considerably. Now oncology is scheduling weekly visits tele or in person, and they referred us to a GAstroentrologist specialist head of the dept. To address the issue of fecal fat qualitative stool sample showing abnormal.
You just have to be proactive and find the right departments to address your issues.
Be constantly on the phone with questions often.
He is also on lonsurf since sept. And now on cycle two. Labs are done frequently, cbc, camp, cea, pro time etc. Will await to see what labs GI will recommend. His cea end sept was 200, just recently it was 187. Hope this is good sign. In past the highest was 80. End of nov we have mri to see how the y90 is doing it’s work.
Good luck and keep posting your news. Just be strong, and ask ask questions and research everything.
Yiannis

I looked up an article at hopkinsmedicine.org entitled Treating Colon Cancer That Has Spread to the Liver; A Team Approach that makes it sound like you have lots of options! Has he thought about having his colon removed? Pretty serious step but loads better than what the oncologist was saying. Is he doing ok with Y90 side effects today.

The first Y90 on left liver lobe was kind of rough but afterwards went okay. Prior to that he had a celiac plexus block four days ago he had the Y90 right liver lobe and it went really well. Cea was at 200 and yesterday labs showed it at 187 cea. Other Labs were great.
Yesterday started cycle 2 of Lonsurf 55mg morning and same evening for five days off 2 then on five off for several weeks.
However he had a fat fecal test and it was abnormal so we are seeing a GI doctor in three weeks. He needs to gain weight but fecal qualitative being abnormal means he is loosing nutrients any thoughts about diet to improve nutrients and retain them? Bowel movement improving slowly, appetite is good but not eating all of the food. Any suggestions will be of help.
