According to my DNA testing, I have not inherited Parkinson’s Disease. There is a genetic variation that could be inherited, according to what I read in material supplied by the company that I got tested by! It is not in my DNA, I’ve had Parkinson’s for nearly 10 years now! I have 2 Brothers, and 2 Sisters that were all worried that they might get it! I explained my DNA testing to them! I am 79, and so far, none of my brothers, or sisters, have had any symptoms, of Parkinson’s. I believe mine came about, as s result of heavy metals exposure, from 30 years, working in a foundry, and/or 3 big time concussions, that I’ve had. in earlier years! Parkinson’s is a very difficult disease, to have, with many variable symptoms, for some, that need to be addressed. I would recommend that a person with this disease should have a movement disorder specialist, to help them get through dealing with the many possible symptoms! Unfortunately, for me, I have a general Neurologist, who only treats and examines my mobility issues! I have autonomic system involvement, along with myriad other symptoms, that, by and large, are not addressed adequately by my neurologist! My family doctor doesn’t even ask me about my Parkinson’s when I go for my annual wellness visit! So, in other words, I sense a lack of support, probably because of my age, from my Physician’s! Many Doctors, these days, seem like they don’t want to bother much, with elderly, Medicare patients! For one thing, Medicare does not pay Physician’s as much as they should, for services rendered!
I’m the same age but newly diagnosed so I’m curious what movement problems I can anticipate. Currently, I have a moderate hand tremor that is much worse when I’m stressed. I had a classic slow Parkinson’s shuffle but Carbidova/Levidopa has given me back my normal gait (except when I’m very tired or the meds are wearing off).
I understand what you are saying about doctors being too narrowly focused and not want to address Parkinson’s or specific symptoms. I hope that you find the care that you need.
Thank you for being so supportive! I am further along in my progression, of this aggravating ailment! My rolling pill tremor has gotten somewhat worse, and it does, indeed, get worse, when I’m under stress! I drop things, losing my grip, or tremor acting up, more than I used to. Carb/Levodopa had been helping me keep my gait relatively normal, for a number of years, but, lately, this year, the Parkinson’s shuffle has taken over, and, alarmingly, I lost control of speeding up my walk, and couldn’t control the slow shuffling well, being hunched over! My neurologist sent me to physical therapy, where I practically had to learn to walk again, along with balance exercises! Therapy got me back on track, where I got better, but I have to keep up the exercises, which are on YouTube, under the Parkinson’s Association sponsorship! I had regained my ability to control my walking, with exercise, but the slowness still seems to want to creep in, because of disease progression!!
Thank you for your helpful reply. I’ll have to look up and try the YouTube exercises and also some physical therapy when I start to shuffle again. I also noticed that I dropped things more but didn’t know it was Parkinson’s related.
I agree! It seems we are throw away individuals! Makes you feel like you don't matter because you are geriatric and have health needs. I feel for everyone on this site. We deserve respect and care from physicians and ancillary staff. Not the opposite! My rant is finished!
