Will I ever recover from my operation for spinal stenosis?

Posted by elizadolittle @elizadolittle, Mar 20, 2024

I had my operation a year ago, March 23rd. i appear to be getting better. I do go days without a painkiller.
Yesterday was not a good day. I couldn't sit at the computer and do my work. I finally remembered to use an ice pack on my back. It helped a bit. I couldn't sit still so I went out and washed down my patio furniture. By midnight I was pain free!
I find it so frustrating not knowing what works best. Do nothing and sit around or get up and get moving. Has anyone heard of the book,"Don't Get out of Bed?" I tuned into a PBS show where it was talked about. It's all about exercises for senior. Has anyone tried it?

I haven’t watched it, but about two months ago, I started writing my stationary bike, which has been collecting dust for three years. I worked up to an hour hour and a half every day or so. Some mornings I don’t feel like it and I noticed that correlated if I took the muscle relaxers at night for my cervical spine surgery, which wasn’t very successful. It was complicated. I walked twice a day, but when I added the hour hour and a half on the exercise bike all these dramatic changes have taken place for the good! I suggest you force yourself into an exercise program that works for you and give it a couple months. I was so angry at the fact I wasn’t ready for another Spine surgery and the pain management doctor didn’t want to do more Cortizone (because he didn’t get paid for more than four times a year) plus it’s not good for my body that there was nothing else left, but to express my anger through exercise. That worked out really well and now everything from my glaucoma to my lipid levels my pain levels everything has dropped. It started out with five minutes, and I worked myself up to 90 by doing things that entrusted me on the Internet and reading in the morning. I totally believe in joint replacement surgeries and spine surgeries. I’ve had great ones and not so great ones however, my orthopedic surgeon has now told me that if I have more surgeries, I won’t be more than 80%. What happens as you have good surgeries to correct deficits you’re also aging and degenerating more at the same time. It’s the classic hamster running in the hamster wheel.

I've noticed that when I walk my little dog longer distances, my pain seems to disappear as well.
Right now, with the recent lazar treatments, the pain isn't that "double-up and crawl in a corner." That is progress. It helps me do more physically without "whining."
I do my own housework. I have a cleaning lady once a month for the vacuuming, etc. I just keep reminding myself, there are worse things to have.

Have a great day!

What was the name of the operation you had for spinal stenosis if you don't mind me asking

There are days that I feel like you. Then there are days I feel like my old self. I'm glad I had the operation. It's not perfect. The doctor didn't promise perfection.

I've gone from 16 pills a day to 4 or 5 a day.

I'm trying lazar treatments right now. It seems to be helping. I don't expect it to work on my back like it did on my knees. I had my first treatment on my knees a month ago and barely a twitch. I've had two on my back--the second today. Fingers crossed.

Medicare does not cover laser treatments. I spent around $600 for these treatments for chronic lower back pain (after an unsuccessful laminectomy some years ago). The physical therapist pushed for it, but it didn't help me. Wish you have better luck with it.

I'm lucky. I live in Canada. (Thank you, Mom, for marrying my Dad and coming to Canada.) I have extended medical fortunately. I'm not sure what I would do without it.

I'm hoping it helps (lazar). I've had 4 days without that agonizing pain. It seems to be wearing off. I had a great day yesterday. I got lots done. Today? Not so much.

The pain sneaks up on you and before you know it, it is full-blown. I finally remembered to use Voltaran along with the Tramadol/acetemenophen this afternoon.

I read a few days ago that the woman who forced Canada to address the issue of medically assisted suicide had spinal stenosis. (MAID). I can understand why she did. I'm not comtemplating it. I have too much to do.

I'm physically able to do things in spite of the pain. I keep thinking of people who are worse off than I am. Then I stop complaining.

Have a great day. I'll keep you posted on what happens.

I don't really know. I don't remember my doctor telling what it was called. Sorry.

The surgeon who did mine claims a 95+ % success rate.

And you, who received this surgeon's ministrations? What do you say? Have you posted your story and I can't find it (apologies, if so)?
How are you, post surgery. If you agree, hallelujah! If not, please... your one sentence offering is tantalizing.

My doctor made no promises. I am better. I take 4 to 5 pain killers a day instead of 16 pills. I'm more mobile. I've accepted that I will never be completely pain free. I'm trying lazar treatments along with accupuncture. I do have some pain free days after. Chiropractic also helps temporarily.

The surgery was successful in that I am able to walk now whereas it was very difficult to do pre-surgery. My spinal stenosis had gotten to the point that it was essentially disabling.

Moving is always best.. I've had 2 major surgeries with spinal stenosis plus verbrea crushed.. I wouldn't be walking without my surgeries, but there's no getting back to your younger self. It takes over a year to get more better though. Keep the faith and move as much as possible.
