Which Mayo Clinic is best for Prostate Cancer treatment and wait times

Posted by voc @voc, May 30 11:05pm

Hello, my husband has been recently diagnosed with Prostate Cancer (Had a 5.8 PSA in February, PC confirmed through MRI and biopsy in May: Gleason 8, Grade 4). We live in Alaska and are trying to find an excellent center for confirmation of diagnosis and treatment. He has been a patient of Mayo AZ but we are wondering which Mayo location is best for prostate cancer treatments and what the likely wait times are for getting the initial appt and then treatment. We feel like we have wasted valuable time working our way through local and regional medical care this winter/spring so are anxious to get seen. Thank you.

Radiation/Oncology at Phoenix Mayo has been outstanding. (Must have been, I have not gone anywhere else!)
The entire staff seems very dedicated, extremely competent, very efficient. (Proton Beam treatment.)
Very strong support resources as well, such as bladder management, follow up, etc.
Good Luck!

Hello,
Hello, I understand your concern. I’m from Wyoming and after researching my options, I wanted to find a place that did lots of treatments and were experts. I felt experience was valuable; therefore, I took a little extra time processing the unsettling news that I had 6 out 12 biopsy samples with Gleason sources of 6 and 7. My PSA was 4.2. It took me 7 months to get everything line up at the Mayo Clinic in AZ. COVID-19 also added to the delay. Anyways, I had surgery on January 7, 2022. My PSA was 4.3. I was fortunate to have had my surgery as scheduled because the surgery center shutdown the following week because of COVID-19 and staffing problems. I had my surgery in the morning and went home in the afternoon. I was pleased with the AZ Clinic and especially with my recovery! Good luck with your decision.

You might consider moving forward with getting all of the medical records ordered, regardless of where you will go….they will want the records. I had surgery on my prostate at Mayo in Jacksonville….I cannot say enough good things about it. I suspect you will receive excellent care at any of the three Mayo Clinic’s…..I honestly and truly believe this.

voc Iwas treated at Mayo Scottsdale, AZ with my aggressive grade 10. I am thoroughly pleased and expect to be on this planet and still breathing for many more years. You may have the opportunity to obtain housing on the Scottsdale campus. I would inquire ASAP. I opted for Proton Beam and can't see a rationale for any other current methodology. Lupron was used aggressively to slow my tumor activity down to a level that was controlled, then Proton Beam was used. I've been on Lupron since day one. Not pleasant for me but for some it's a cake walk. It appears that exercise greatly mitigates Lupron issues. That is MY and only MY opinion. Favorable weather greatly enhances the Phoenix metro area.

How can we help you??

Thank you all for the replies- it has been a bit bumpy getting some clarity at Mayo on 2nd opinion diagnosis and treatment suggestions (sent all his records to AZ) but he has consult appt virtual with Rochester next week so that is progress! @dpcarriere how many proton treatments did you have? @jimcinak was really generous with his time talking with my husband this week about his experience. Thank you all for responding!

Thank you! They do have our records – a bit of a communications issue talking to central appt staff and what was passed on to Urology AZ who apparently are not taking new patients right now but I think we have it sorted out

I believe I had 28 treatments – something like that. Also due to the gravity of my grade 10 my entire prostate was treated. Didn't feel a thing, nothing at all, not even a tingle. No pain or discomfort with Proton Beam, that's one of the benefits as well as it's pinpoint accuracy and lack of surrounding tissue damage.

Reply! Due to UROLIFT implant in prostate, (BPH issue), the exposure level was carefully managed over 44 proton treatments over 9 weeks. As with others, no pain or discomfort. Wait times were always minimal, scheduling team seems on top of it, always. Some impact on bladder, but that has been well handled so far, with no long term issues. 6 month PSA and testosterone resting.

I just confirmed that about 90% of PCa patients that receive proton beam therapy (PBT) at Mayo in Rochester have the five treatment regimen. Apparently, Mayo in Scottsdale is now treating more PCa patients receiving PBT with the five treatment regimen. Of course, individual patient circumstances and providers make a huge difference in the therapy received.
